Los Fresnos Schools Celebrate Constitution Week
- Updated: September 27, 2013
Las Yescas Elementary Brings Out the Red, White and Blue to Educate Their Students
Last Tuesday was Constitution Day around the United States, and at least one school in the Los Fresnos CISD.
At Las Yescas Elementary, each class worked on posters on display in the hallways to create awareness of Constitution Week.
Patriotic music is being played in the cafeteria during lunch and teachers have been encouraged to dress up Tuesday in costumes and hats appropriate for the occasion. A replica of the Constitution is also on display, along with banners and posters of our forefathers. During morning announcements, students are reading about the Bill of Rights.
Las Yescas Elementary Principal Oscar de la Rosa said, “We believe it is important to celebrate Constitution Day because our Constitution defines a framework for the country’s law and order. It was officially adopted in September 17, 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and it has been amended 27 times since then. The first three articles of our Constitution describe the three branches of our government and the first 10 amendments are known as the Bill of Rights. This symbolizes the freedom and culture of the United States of America. We are exposing the children to the Preamble as well as the Bill of Rights in the morning announcements and giving them an explanation of what it means for them and their families. Our teachers have worked with our students incorporating through their Social Studies curriculum the creation of posters which expose the children to the Constitution. Patriotic music was played throughout the week during the students’ lunch time. Some of our teachers and students dressed up, and this has opened the students to ask questions and learn more of what it means to be free, and where this freedom comes from. Las Yescas Elementary is proud and thankful for the freedom it receives through our Constitution. The public was invited to visit the school for Constitution Day, and activities throughout the week”.
Las Yescas Elementary is the northernmost school in the Los Fresnos CISD. It is located on FM 803 just three-tenths of a mile south of FM 106. It is 10 miles north of Highway 100 and only four miles east of Rio Hondo High School.
