PLE students welcome visitors with smiles and big “hello’s”

On Friday, May 1, 2015 Palmer-Laakso Elementary hosted a Leadership Day assembly where several people from the community were invited to attend and take a tour of the school and see exactly how they are implementing the “Leader In Me” program.

Upon approaching the elementary school quite a few students were awaiting visitors with a huge “Hello” and “Welcome”. The program began promptly at 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria with an explanation of the seven habits of highly effective people. The seven habits are found in a book titled “The Leader In Me” and Palmer-Laakso Elementary has implemented a program to get students used to using the language found within the book’s pages. The program has graciously been funded by Panda Express, of whom representatives were present at the assembly.

Now in it’s second year with the program, PLE students have executed data binders to track their progress. For it’s third year, next year, the goal is to bring the Leader In Me program to what is considered “lighthouse” status. “We want our students to be enamored of Mrs. Palmer and Mrs. Laakso” said Mrs. Liz Swantner of the program to educate students on who Palmer & Laakso are and what they stood for in the community.

The Jr. Lighthouse Team of students then took turns introducing the seven habits of highly effective people and describing how each of them implement them in their daily activities. The seven habits are; Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think “Win-Win”, Seek First to Understand Then to be Understood, Synergize and Sharpen the Saw.

The Jr. Lighthouse Team then conducted a tour of the campus which was followed by speeches from guest speakers, choir performance and a reception after the program.
