New Turf at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium Almost Ready for New Season
- Updated: July 31, 2015
The Falc
ons are expected to be wearing new uniforms with new helmets during the upcoming season, and the biggest change of all will involve the stadium surface. The natural grass at the Falcons’ home football field is being replaced by an artificial surface as Los Fresnos becomes the last Class 6A school in the Rio Grande Valley to make such a switch.
Los Fresnos CISD contracted with Hellas Construction for $1.78 million based on a good reputation for quality service, superior products, and one point of contact. The conversion of Los Fresnos High School and Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium fields from natural grass to Matrix® Synthetic Turf broke ground early in May with completion set for August.
Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium, with a capacity of 9,000, has been installing Matrix® Turf with Realfill™ infill and a Cushdrain® pad (frequently called an elastic layer) over the summer months.
Installation of the artificial surface at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium began soon after graduation was held there on June 6. The timetable to complete the project, weather permitting, was approximately 60 days.
Clint Finley, Athletic Director at Los Fresnos CISD, says “Hellas fields not only look beautiful, but with the Cushdrain technology, we feel like we are giving our athletes the safest field that we can possibly provide.” The stadium will be completed in late August to host the Falcons Friday night football games.
The Los Fresnos High School “Mini Stadium” also features Matrix® Turf with Realfill™ infill and a Cushdrain® pad which will be utilized by the JV Light, JV Dark, and Varsity football and soccer teams practices. Finley believes the new turf practice field will allow for more practice time in any weather with fewer cancellations.
Los Fresnos’ football teams, varsity and sub-varsity, already are quite used to playing on artificial surfaces as all other schools in District 32-6A have them.
The switch from natural grass to an artificial surface at the stadium and at the high school practice field has been well received by everyone expected to be affected by the change.
Fans of the Los Fresnos Falcons can anticipate changes when their football team takes the field at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium in a month.
