Convocation Rally Inspires All for Start of New Year

Los Fresnos CISD teachers and professional staff gathered for an inspirational morning at Convocation last Tuesday, August 18th, at the Brownsville Events Center.
The crowd of 800 was motivated by the enthusiastic Drum Cafe, which provided an hour-long team building program. There was a drum at each seat in the audience, and each person was motivated to work and drum in harmony.
Superintendent Gonzalo Salazar welcomed the enthusiastic crowd and Board of Trustees president Darlene Pederson also addressed the audience.
Student entertainment included performances by the Los Fresnos High School Jazz Band, LFHS Choir, and Stars Dance Team.
All 2014-15 campus Teachers of the Year were introduced. The district’s Secondary Teacher of the Year Ashley Cox from Los Fresnos United and Elementary Teacher of the Year Irma Perales from Rancho Verde Elementary addressed the audience.
Also featured was a speech on video by 2015 Los Fresnos High School valedictorian Brianna Garcia, who is starting her freshman year at Rice University.
District reports included test score data from all schools that showed Los Fresnos CISD schools consistently surpassing regional and state averages in STAAR. Los Fresnos CISD also was one of 10 districts in the state to receive the Texas Education Agency Post-Secondary Readiness recognition for the second straight year.
Another highlight of the morning came outdoors as the teachers and professional staff lined up in the numbers “100” in commemoration of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the opening of the first Los Fresnos school in 1915. The “100” was captured on video by a drone.
