Los Fresnos High School senior Jocelyn Sosa Ramirez was named one of 15 statewide recipients of the Texas State Board of Education Student Hero awards by SBOE District 2 Member Ruben Cortez Tuesday.
Cortez presented Sosa Ramirez the award at the LFHS Student Academic Achievement Banquet.
One student was selected from each of the 15 SBOE districts in Texas. District 2 encompasses 17 counties in the south and southeast Texas.
The new Texas State Board of Education award was created for service/assistance or good deeds and must be voluntary and not part of any curriculum, graduation requirements or class or community project.
The service/assistance or good deed must benefit other students in Texas, either individually or as a whole.
The benefit may be to students of one campus, a district or a community.
“The award is for a student who demonstrates outstanding acts of charity and kindness for their fellow students,” Cortez said. “Students recognized across the state, in each State Board of Education District, range from raising funds for sick children, gathering donations for low-income students, offering peer tutoring, and other volunteer activities.”
More than 40 students submitted essays without names or schools on them for Cortez to review before he selected the one written by the Los Fresnos High senior.
Sosa Ramirez is a Gates Millenium scholar and is ranked among the top 10 students at LFHS. She plans to attend The University of Texas in the fall. She plans to major in Mathematics and hopes to go to law school.
