Saturday, June 4th, the weather threatened the evening’s Los Fresnos High School Commencement at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium.

Rain started fall 40 minutes before the ceremony, and students were ushered indoors. But 20 minutes later, the skies cleared, setting up a beautiful evening for the ceremony.

This one will be remembered for a long time.

It had been 30 years since an LFHS ceremony was moved indoors. The Class of 1986, which had 190 members, graduated at Jacob Brown Auditorium in Brownsville because of rain that day.

But on a beautiful Saturday night, more than 6,000 people turned out to see 684 graduates march across the stage to receive their diplomas.

One student shouted “Mom, I did it!” and held his diploma high toward the general area of his mother on the east side of the stadium.

There were smiles, many hugs, laughs, and tears of joy. Everybody looked happy and proud.

As soon as the ceremony concluded, parents and friends of the graduates were allowed on the turf at the stadium.

The top 10 academic students took turns with speaking roles during the ceremony.

They included:
Pledge of Allegiance: Cristiana Garza
Welcome: Kendall House
Presentation of Platform Guests: Tristen Cruz
Reflections: Miranda Gonzales
Challenge: Benjamin Simpson
Class Poem: Natalia de Leon
Aspirations: Kelsi McDonough
Appreciation: Lucero Dorantes
