Winter Babies at the Gladys Porter Zoo
- Updated: March 23, 2018
Brownsville, TX — Gladys Porter Zoo staff is excited to announce the births of three female Grant’s zebras.
On January 15, the first of the three foals was born. The second followed on February 7, and just five days later, on February 12, the last foal was born. All three have been under the care of their mothers since birth.
Zoo staff has kept a watchful eye on them, but the mothers have been doing a great job of caring for their young. The zebra herd now consists of the one stallion, three mares, and their three foals. All can all be viewed together on exhibit.
Grant’s zebra are listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. There are about 150,000 to 250,000 mature individuals in the wild, and those numbers have been steadily declining for several decades. The main threat to these beautiful creatures is hunting throughout their range, especially when they move out of protected areas.
The births of these Zoo babies are considered a step in the right direction for the conservation of threatened species. For more information about the Gladys Porter Zoo, please visit www.gpz.org.
