Los Fresnos to Join BikeShare Program
- Updated: November 23, 2018
by Tony Vindell/LFN
A bicycle share (rental) program is getting ready to be launched in the Rio Grande Valley and the City of Los Fresnos has made its intention to be a part of the project that is about to roll out.
During its last two meetings, the council approved two readings of Ordinance 497 which calls for establishing fees and regulations for a “Dockless Vehicle” permit program.
City Manager Mark Milum said the Rio Grande Valley Development Council has been working on the project for a while.
He said the idea behind it is to provide a means of affordable transportation to Valley residents.
Unlike a program some cities have where people can rent a bike from a rack using a credit card and which has come its end, the BikeShare program operates differently.
Users pay $1 to unlock the scooter and are charged 13 cents a minute after that.
All pricing information is shown in the smartphone app., or on a Web site.
A press conference was scheduled to take place earlier this month at the Weslaco-based LRGVDC to outline details of the BikeShare RGV, but it was postponed until further notice.
