LOS FRESNOS – Although the Los Fresnos City Council did not take action to award a bid to a company that will build the city’s new hike and bike trail, the project has advanced one step closer.

Estimated at a cost of more than a $1 million, the trail will run from the west side of the city’s Nature Park, cross Texas Highway 100, and ultimately connect with Cara Cara Trail and downtown Brownsville.

The trail will become part of a countywide project that will include the Bahia Grande, Laguna Vista, Rio Hondo and Harlingen.

City Manager Mark Milum said five bids were submitted for the bike and trail project.

The city council will award a bid to a company at the next city council meeting.

In other actions, the council approved:

  • A first reading of Ordinance 511 to annex territory and extend the city’s boundary limits.
  • A bid and the awarding of a contract for a wastewater treatment plant chlorine contact basin and chemical feed system.
  • A bank depository service with First Community Bank.
  • Appointing Leo Casanova to the board of the Community Development Corp.

At the meeting, Milum informed the council that the city’s response to the U.S. Census stands at 41.9 percent.

Ideally, he said, he would like to reach a success rate of more than 90 percent.

Although the local school district plays a role during a census countdown, classes are being suspended.

The reason behind that is because of today’s pandemic.
