Los Fresnos Holds ‘I Tune Out Drugs’ Back to School Fair

Hundreds of students attended the second annual Night Out in Los Fresnos to get supplies for the 2018-19 school year which begins later this month.

The “I Tune Out Drugs” back to school fair was held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the city’s park and inside the Ethel L. Whipple Memorial Library where close to 30 students got their hair cut from hairdressers from the Mei Academy of Cosmetology of Brownsville.

Among them were Gilbert Rocha and Caroline Villanueva.

Rocha and Villanueva sat on a chair as workers from the beauty center cut their hair using scissors used in that line of business.

His and her mom said they were glad to have the opportunity to attend the event because it helps them save money.
Rocha’s mom brought her three sons to get a haircut, saving her about $30.

Villanueva’s mom said the event helps take off stress.

Out on the park grounds, hundreds of students and their parents stood in line behind a dozen stations where they received school supplies such as pens, notebooks, coupons, bags and backpacks.

A local heavy metal band called Black Ice played several tunes including songs by Black Sabbath.

Isidra Fernandez, who brought her two sons, said this was their first time at the Night Out.

Asked how she found out about it, she said through the social media outlet Facebook.

“This is a pretty good event,” Fernandez said. “The children received quite a few school supplies.”

Among the many participants were the City of Los Fresnos, Mexican Consulate’s Office from Brownsville, Friendship of Women, Cameron County District Attorney’s Office, Salon & Spa, Behavioral Health Solutions and Los Fresnos Police Department.
