The girls water polo team with Los Fresnos school district has made history by winning a first ever regional championship during a recent tournament.<\/p>\n

The team won at Friday\u2019s April 12 inaugural event at the Pharr Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n

The tournament completes an historic season for the region, which fielded the most-ever teams this spring.<\/p>\n

Los Fresnos earned their first girls title only one year after the team was formed.<\/p>\n

The Falcons entered the tournament seeded second to runners-up Pharr\/San Juan\/Alamo, whom they defeated 7-5 to earn their championship trophy.<\/p>\n

And for Coach Jaime Perez, that is highlight of his long time aquatic career.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is our first year competing,\u201d he said. \u201cThere ae now seven competing teams from the Rio Grande Valley to Laredo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perez said two teams were in the region three years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cWater polo is an Olympic sport and we hope it will become under the UIL program,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s an excellent contact sport.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perez said the team was formed because he likes to utilize the resources the school has to the maximum.<\/p>\n

Team player Joslyn Blanco was named the Most Valuable Player and Perez earned the distinction of Coach of the Year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
