Photo: Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ten area teams competed against each other for the best food at Brownsville\u2019s First Annual Taco Fest.<\/p>\n<p>Taqueria El Cien of Los Fresnos was among them.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the eatery has been in business for about 20 years on Texas Highway 100, it has never competed against other restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is our first time doing this,\u201d Juan Torres Jr. said. \u201cWe will see how it goes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As they kept serving orders of taquitos to those who paid for the right to try them out from each and every stand, others kept doing the same.<\/p>\n<p>At The Shack, an entire family tried their luck as well.<\/p>\n<p>The Shack?<\/p>\n<p>Jose Luis Doniaz said they came up with the name just for the competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We don\u2019t have a business but are thinking about it,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are all family members who love to cook using family recipes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their entry was tacos de pollo, and were one of two competitors that did not cook bistek.<\/p>\n<p>At the El Santuario\/Flying Pig stand its chef was more creative using no grease and preparing tacos topped with chimichurri \u2013 a sauce that originated from Argentina and is served with steaks.<\/p>\n<p>And it worked out.<\/p>\n<p>El Santuario took first place, followed by Taco Palenque and The Shack.<\/p>\n<p>El Delirio Restaurant took The People\u2019s Choice award.<\/p>\n<p>The contest, held Saturday, April 27, at Brownsville Sports Park drew several hundred people.<\/p>\n<p>Among them were Frank Ponce, Emily Lopez and Ricardo and Annette Sanchez.<\/p>\n<p>They all said they tried several taco stands and were glad to be there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrownsville is having all kinds of events now,\u201d Annette Sanchez said. \u201cThis is good as it gives people something to do.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Tony Vindell\/LFN Ten area teams competed against each other for the best food at Brownsville\u2019s First Annual Taco Fest.
