Photo: Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of turtle lovers from throughout the Rio Grande Valley participated in the annual Ridley Rush held at Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville.<\/p>\n<p>The event was held in conjunction with World Ocean Days which took place Saturday, June 8.<\/p>\n<p>Some 900 people from a couple of years old to adults and a few senior citizens either walked or ran about a a mile from the entrance on East Ringgold Street to the zoo via East Seventh Street to a dinosaur exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>Each registered participant received a medal at the finish line and was able to wander through the zoo afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am here with my son,\u201d Trish Varela said. \u201cWe are raising awareness for these turtles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said they like to participate in the event because it\u2019s a worthy cause.<\/p>\n<p>Her son, Gerardo, agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes it is,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s very fun and I love to run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Janie Barron of Harlingen and Laura Camacho of San Benito said this was their second year to participate in a Ridley Rush.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did not think it was going to be held because of the heat,\u201d Barron said, \u201dbut it happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10422\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10422\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10422\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/037.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/037.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/037-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Janie Barron. left, of Harlingen, and Laura Camacho, of San Benito, with their medals at the finish line.
