Photo: Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Rio Grande Valley has hundreds, if not thousands of restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>Some come and go, while others stay around for a while.<\/p>\n<p>In Brownsville, the Vermillion Restaurant &amp; Watering Hole is getting closer to turning 100 years old.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Aug. 13, the popular hangout celebrated its 85th anniversary and people turned out to congratulate its owners George and Iselle Perez.<\/p>\n<p>The Perez family bought the Vermillion about four years ago and have been running the business ever since offering the same type of food and ambiance the restaurant has been known for.<\/p>\n<p>Perez said he began working at the restaurant 38 years ago at the age of 13.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told its owner that one day I will it buy from him,\u201d he said, referring to Dan Davidson. \u201cAnd here we are today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davidson said he had the Vermillion for 44 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel great about it,\u201d he said when asked how he felt about the Perez\u2019s owning the business today. \u201cIt\u2019s great for the Vermillion, for the employees and for the customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John and Romie Sosa were among those stopping by during the restaurant\u2019s 85th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We have been coming here for many, many years,\u201d Sosa said. \u201cWe have known the previous and new owners for a while too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Romie Sosa said the nachos are a Vermillion trademark, while her husband said he likes the shrimp sandwich.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Tony Vindell\/LFN The Rio Grande Valley has hundreds, if not thousands of restaurants.
