astrophysical events<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 like exploding stars, the collision of black holes and merging neutron stars \u2013 in the far reaches of the universe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many challenges associated with searching large areas of the sky for fast-evolving astronomical sources, and this funding is critical for the projects investigated by UTRGV physics and astronomy students, who are now using the recently upgraded UTRGV\u00a0<a located at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001D4ItGE4nLeICFfdvDN5FZM0FqaTcijJHat1O6CjweQOm_nnyDye9SpkHp37GOziqb5o_teJSy4TXDTZaTVZDuWDsJFNPj0N_HIVMj1amVY3z6KkM3m40u3VGZXa40yBAQcRMhVFRyZabGzKjHI743XkrGfc78p1Flez3_wbruJkGRwCjqGLjGg==&amp;c=iedKy8Lb3ucChgU1RPDGqRWdNASh-ISPFnYDAXoL0YCH6srthnpNAQ==&amp;ch=mvmJiPwBmHyN8D7JMt3TylnY1HgP_I1_j6iOZsfrE2tCVtVSJqHkUA==\">Cord\u00f3n Mac\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0in Salta Province, Argentina, away from light pollution and other factors that could interfere with the sensitive research \u2013 started earlier in 2019 with funding provided by the Argentine National Science Foundation (<a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001D4ItGE4nLeICFfdvDN5FZM0FqaTcijJHat1O6CjweQOm_nnyDye9SpkHp37GOziqVmsbGzimWzk8DE0ihSHoSbAoqeO-k9G24ISysjzLGG-JKWDe59Q5Gg7R7UVPDOYKzBOSZDd2PrLbdtpeqYgWy2MEplxQGxiTQXhBz0wtp5gxToo-3nQivMHHcytCskvAyyshsrfiI8B25XLMi-K6VjLtgDbi__jxcxYZgKReEqZJCj2tqWwPil3sch9exvLEadzqnjQfKikyRnmaQC0ppCDqBHf3xc9ZzCHucc0RKAtxjfySVQtFeA==&amp;c=iedKy8Lb3ucChgU1RPDGqRWdNASh-ISPFnYDAXoL0YCH6srthnpNAQ==&amp;ch=mvmJiPwBmHyN8D7JMt3TylnY1HgP_I1_j6iOZsfrE2tCVtVSJqHkUA==\">CONICET<\/a>) and about $500,000 in NSF funding previously awarded to Diaz.<\/p>\n<p>The telescope is expected to be operational \u2013 with some limited capabilities \u2013 in early 2020, and is scheduled to achieve<a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001D4ItGE4nLeICFfdvDN5FZM0FqaTcijJHat1O6CjweQOm_nnyDye9SpkHp37GOziqci5bZJdhH0ZwOrr6uYdA_OqyPGAwbYCgfJPJ5aaFcYSneM6KnpD23SHIcE1R1fvtNeR0SrJ3HNf4r33mJzRNPI7_ZHCZ3GHqxM3C--hd5jhdDBvsfHeL8N8TUPZPIYW8ulG5bcartCA=&amp;c=iedKy8Lb3ucChgU1RPDGqRWdNASh-ISPFnYDAXoL0YCH6srthnpNAQ==&amp;ch=mvmJiPwBmHyN8D7JMt3TylnY1HgP_I1_j6iOZsfrE2tCVtVSJqHkUA==\">\u00a0design sensitivity<\/a>\u00a0in early 2021. Diaz and the team will be able to monitor remotely any observations of deep space events based on alarms released through special\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001D4ItGE4nLeICFfdvDN5FZM0FqaTcijJHat1O6CjweQOm_nnyDye9SpkHp37GOziqayHzn8fWTd5qrOU84GRSSZoSPhxTObtE6x6kw9sIG9xaRBEl6oYGpZ8R4rVYhPPt4cKQbFM0B_b2ZYFONvauqJdgsNxuz_VVaSi-vsqMk9A4v1U2_M1Lbw==&amp;c=iedKy8Lb3ucChgU1RPDGqRWdNASh-ISPFnYDAXoL0YCH6srthnpNAQ==&amp;ch=mvmJiPwBmHyN8D7JMt3TylnY1HgP_I1_j6iOZsfrE2tCVtVSJqHkUA==\">LIGO<\/a>\u00a0networks.<\/p>\n<p>LIGO \u2013 the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory operated by Caltech and MIT \u2013 includes more than 1,200 scientists from around the world and is the world\u2019s largest gravitational wave observatory. In September 2017, the LIGO Scientific Collaboration announced the first joint detection of gravitational waves in the first significant signal recorded.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>BACKGROUND<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Diaz\u2019s project began six years ago when he,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001D4ItGE4nLeICFfdvDN5FZM0FqaTcijJHat1O6CjweQOm_nnyDye9SpkHp37GOziqBpQyNehq-feA8DznAq06uUn80z62XR1OFLYO3UhqnZriRg9eqBqVW5n1ze3-zeziVLBmvPDBjw7Wp29HWGf_95QOhadcexeUpLMLZiLQm8WPsslcXJnTVvmgFeXHKEGkYGLMqg9oJ8Nazyf-KjINOiH7-GX1stTAfUWmHoZNY9pehIYIOqZ0Lq49xHW9NAifgqtcL3a6jL1OT7Lb62IU86NhZqAwevetqMz6b-scMR-Q6hfboq3xMQ==&amp;c=iedKy8Lb3ucChgU1RPDGqRWdNASh-ISPFnYDAXoL0YCH6srthnpNAQ==&amp;ch=mvmJiPwBmHyN8D7JMt3TylnY1HgP_I1_j6iOZsfrE2tCVtVSJqHkUA==\">Dr. Diego Garcia Lambas<\/a>, professor of astronomy and director of the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Astronomy at the University of C\u00f3rdoba in Argentina, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001D4ItGE4nLeICFfdvDN5FZM0FqaTcijJHat1O6CjweQOm_nnyDye9SpkHp37GOziq7StArY6X8x5BJtWja6SPbJx7k_R-iJ0ieznz5yKt9vT6aO5dVSCjzj__RMCVRB4N1gAQkEEZhmip_gX9BCd5DGccJ6A9UgxviNuoy3Q2k18=&amp;c=iedKy8Lb3ucChgU1RPDGqRWdNASh-ISPFnYDAXoL0YCH6srthnpNAQ==&amp;ch=mvmJiPwBmHyN8D7JMt3TylnY1HgP_I1_j6iOZsfrE2tCVtVSJqHkUA==\">Dr. Lucas Macri<\/a>, professor of astronomy at Texas A&amp;M University and associate dean of the College of Science, launched a collaboration, named \u201cTransient Optical Robotic Observatory of the South,\u201d referred to as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/r20.rs6.net\/tn.jsp?f=001D4ItGE4nLeICFfdvDN5FZM0FqaTcijJHat1O6CjweQOm_nnyDye9SpkHp37GOziqBzIPyHtIIBzFtrtYC8Sh-Ettm2pfX5fIgScTlO20wnrTa663VDQ8_6au6o-01zUhqIgL0dz9dUXMkAMpYTNzwmyb_yNGWByMiXboAvVqi8VPHZzo6WMqXA==&amp;c=iedKy8Lb3ucChgU1RPDGqRWdNASh-ISPFnYDAXoL0YCH6srthnpNAQ==&amp;ch=mvmJiPwBmHyN8D7JMt3TylnY1HgP_I1_j6iOZsfrE2tCVtVSJqHkUA==\">TOROS<\/a>. UTRGV and the University of C\u00f3rdoba in Argentina since then have signed agreements to develop this binational collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, TAMU professors Darren DePoy and Jennifer Marshall will use a portion of the funds to modify the TOROS telescope, building a \u201cprime-focus corrector\u201d in the Charles &amp; Judith Munnerlyn Astronomical and Space Sciences Laboratory at Texas A&amp;M.<\/p>\n<p>Diaz said this precisely-crafted set of lenses will maximize the field of view of a top-of-the-line camera that will be the dedicated instrument of the TOROS telescope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTOROS will make important contributions to the follow-up observation of gravitational wave sources,\u201d Diaz said, \u201cand will help develop the next generation of \u2018big data\u2019 astronomers across diverse communities in the Valley, and across Texas and Argentina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Diaz, UTRGV currently has two full-time scientists, 12 graduate and undergraduate students from the Edinburg and Brownsville campuses, and two teachers from local high schools (all members of the Time Domain Astronomy research group), actively participating in the binational project. Local high school physics teachers also are expected to engage area students in this research.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE SCIENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the most important and frequent sources of gravitational waves are the collision of compact and dense objects, like two Black Holes. But if one of the two colliding objects is a neutron star \u2013 the latest stage in the evolution of stars, and a bit heavier than our Sun \u2013 or two neutron stars, space-time ripples will be produced during the event.<\/p>\n<p>However, a strong electromagnetic emission also occurs during collision, because the \u201cbreaking\u201d of one of the stars sheds matter, which whirls at breathtaking speeds around the new object being formed. In events of this sort, many of the chemical elements heavier than iron, like gold and platinum, are formed.<\/p>\n<p>Because gravitational wave detectors have poor localization capabilities \u2013 that is, they cannot pinpoint the exact position of the source \u2013 wide field surveys provided by telescopes like the TOROS telescope could be extremely valuable in generating not only an exact localization of the source, but also other information associated with such events.
