{"id":10720,"date":"2019-09-06T19:16:10","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T19:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=10720"},"modified":"2019-09-06T19:16:10","modified_gmt":"2019-09-06T19:16:10","slug":"city-council-holds-second-budget-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=10720","title":{"rendered":"City Council Holds Second Budget Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1502\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/losfres.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/losfres.jpg 448w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/losfres-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/losfres-405x260.jpg 405w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/losfres-60x40.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A second workshop to discuss the City of Los Fresnos new budget for fiscal year 2019-2020 was held as the deadline to approve the financial package gets closer and closer.<\/p>\n<p>The new budget takes effect Oct. 1 and runs through Sept. 30.<\/p>\n<p>A budget of a little more than $8.1 million is being proposed to all city services, including utilities, pay for its debt service, fund the Community Development Corp. and for its general fund.<\/p>\n<p>The city has workforce of about 60 employees that get paid close to $100,000 in wages every two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop was held during an Aug. 27 special meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from a number of departments such as public works and the police department talked about the expenses required for their operations.<\/p>\n<p>Carlos Salazar, the city\u2019s public works director, made a report about the materials, supplies, repairs and maintenance \u2013 something which has to be done every year.<\/p>\n<p>The building that still houses the city administrative offices and LFPD will undergo some changes once the new city hall opens, either late this year or early 2020.<\/p>\n<p>A project to tear down a couple of walls and install new tile will take place to make some sections of the building a little larger and more suitable for police to do interviews and other jobs.<\/p>\n<p>City Manager Mark Milum said the city will keep its property tax rate at 71.5 cents for every $100 of assessed valuation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the same as it has been in the last twelve years,\u201d he said. \u201cThe city is growing but we are keeping the rate steady.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In another action, the council voted to buy a van for the city\u2019s senior citizens program.<\/p>\n<p>Money for the $36,000 comes from a state grant with the city contributing $10,171.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be purchased immediately as we have the funds available,\u201d Mayor Polo Narvaez said. \u201cIt\u2019s a pretty good deal.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Tony Vindell\/LFN A second workshop to discuss the City of Los Fresnos new budget for fiscal year 2019-2020 was held as the deadline to approve the financial package gets closer and closer.
