Photo: Maxpixel<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Eric Galatas<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong>AUSTIN, Texas \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0A new report shows the share of federal spending on children was at an all-time low in fiscal year 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The 13th annual Children\u2019s Budget Book released this week by the group\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/firstfocus.org\/resources\/report\/childrens-budget-2019\" target=\"parent\">First Focus on Children<\/a>\u00a0shows the share of spending on children \u2013 at 7.21% \u2013 is down 10% in the past four years.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce Lesley, president of First Focus on Children, says the country needs to fund what\u2019s most important \u2013 children\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe federal budget is a moral document and it really shows what your priorities are as a nation,\u201d he stresses. \u201cAnd our nation is failing to invest in our kids\u2019 future, and failing them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time ever, the share of tax payer money spent on things such as education and child abuse prevention is less than money spent on interest on the national debt.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump\u2019s 2020 budget calls for even deeper cuts to children\u2019s programs and would direct billions of dollars to the border wall.<\/p>\n<p>Eva DeLuna Castro, a budget analyst with the Austin-based\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forabettertexas.org\/\" target=\"parent\">Center for Public Policy Priorities<\/a>, notes the deficit shot up sharply after last year\u2019s tax cuts, which primarily benefited the wealthy and corporations.<\/p>\n<p>Castro says interest on the national debt is squeezing the ability for Congress to make investments in children, veterans, Medicare improvements or anything else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInterest on the debt at this point is about 16% of the taxes we\u2019re paying,\u201d she points out. \u201cEverybody could find better ways to use this other than just paying for debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Congress is supposed to come to a budget agreement by the Sept. 30 deadline. If lawmakers can\u2019t agree, they will need to pass a continuing resolution to fund the government at existing levels.<\/p>\n<p>Last winter, a disagreement over funding for the border wall forced a record 35-day government shutdown.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Eric Galatas AUSTIN, Texas \u2013\u00a0A new report shows the share of federal spending on children was at an all-time low in fiscal year 2019.
