Photo: Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>National Wildlife Week is Oct. 12-19 and to celebrate the occasion the Laguna Atascosa NWR is having a weeklong series of activities at the facility northeast of Los Fresnos.<\/p>\n<p>Better yet. Getting to the park is now a piece of cake as the three-mile route from FM 106 to the park headquarters has been completed.<\/p>\n<p>The once super bumpy road, which made traveling very uncomfortable, was rebuilt from scratch but that does not mean motorists can zoom by.<\/p>\n<p>There is a speed limit of 25 miles per hour and the new road has several speed bumps and rumbling stripes to alert drivers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are really excited that Buena Vista Road has been completed,\u201d Christopher Quezada, the visitor services park ranger, said. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot better to get to the refuge now as the bumpy road is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, or the first duty of NW Week, the refuge will host a number of events from 8 a.m. to .4 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>That includes guided bird walks, do-your-own screen printing of an ocelot (bring you own t-shirt), refuge management and land acquisition.<\/p>\n<p>There will be an arts and crafts and food truck will on hand to grab a meal or snack.<\/p>\n<p>From Sunday through Friday, Oct. 17, there will be basket weaving classes, birding bus tours, nature walks and a yoga session.<\/p>\n<p>A reforestation will end the weeklong activities at the Santa Ana NWR in Hidalgo County.<\/p>\n<p>For more information please call 956-748-3607.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Tony Vindell\/LFN National Wildlife Week is Oct. 12-19 and to celebrate the occasion the Laguna Atascosa NWR is having a weeklong series of activities at the facility northeast of Los Fresnos.
