Photo: Courtesy photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Although the 2019-20 white-tailed season is one third over, opening day was day to remember for a veteran hunter from Brownsville.<\/p>\n<p>At about 6:30 a.m. this past Nov. 2, Ruben Pizana went into his blind and an hour later he saw two bucks coming out of the brush across from his stand.<\/p>\n<p>He then took a shot at the biggest one and bagged an eight-pointer weighing more than 200 pounds.<\/p>\n<p>Although the buck was not Pizana\u2019s biggest one, it was the first one that he has taken on a season\u2019s first day in his many years of hunting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI have been hunting since I was 18,\u201d said the fifty year old certified mechanic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a first one for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pizana said he could have waited for the rut but since a windfarm surveying crew has been working at the ranch where he hunts near Chihuahua, a small town in Zapata County, he decided against it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe might not be able to hunt during the rut,\u201d he said. \u201cbut I took my chances and got me a nice buck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pizana said he will hunt till the end of the regular season, which will wrap up on Jan. 19 in South Texas.<\/p>\n<p>After that, the late season for does and spikes will go from Jan.20 through Feb. 2.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Tony Vindell\/LFN Although the 2019-20 white-tailed season is one third over, opening day was day to remember for a veteran hunter from Brownsville.
