But because of her young age, she wasn’t allowed to play.

The 4-year-old was in tears and it was then that the Reyes family knew she was destined to be a softball player.

On Feb. 5, Reyes signed her letter of intent to play softball at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, fulfilling a lifelong dream.

“I’m excited to continue my softball career,” Reyes said. “I decided on going there (to St. Mary’s) because I’ve always wanted to be in San Antonio. I have always pictured myself being there and the offer was great, I couldn’t deny it.”

Reyes, who is arguably the best player in the Valley, is equipment with the five tools. Reyes, who is a shortstop but center fielder by trade, can take over a game with her arm and defensive abilities.

At the plate she crushed 27 of her team’s 42 homers as a junior, and was second on the team in hits with 46 and second on the team in extra-base hits with 15. She also led the club in runs with 44. Her average was just as impressive as Reyes raked a team hit .517.

“The recruiting process was insane,” Reyes said. “I had breakdowns; I wasn’t sure where I was going to go or who I was going to sign with. I’m excited to just have fun this year and now I know I have four more years to play after high school. That is a blessing.”

Reyes’ drive and work ethic are a few intangibles that Lady Falcons skipper Traci Blackman sees in her senior.

“Reba puts in so much work,” Blackman said. “Not just here in school but in her workouts over the summer. She goes above and beyond. She set a goal for herself and she’s done nothing but work until she got to that goal.”

Reyes will be the catalyst on this year’s 2020 club. The Lady Falcons reached the postseason last year after a three-year absence, before bowing out to Weslaco High in the bi-district round.

By KEVIN NARRO / LFN Senior center fielder and shortstop Reba Reyes was destined to play college softball.
