{"id":11619,"date":"2020-05-15T18:46:40","date_gmt":"2020-05-15T18:46:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=11619"},"modified":"2020-05-15T18:46:41","modified_gmt":"2020-05-15T18:46:41","slug":"health-insurance-options-for-texans-hit-by-covid-19-job-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=11619","title":{"rendered":"Health insurance options for Texans hit by COVID-19 job loss"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"980\" height=\"652\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/gr-70112-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/gr-70112-1-1.jpg 980w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/gr-70112-1-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/gr-70112-1-1-768x511.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>Research shows children with health coverage are more likely to succeed in school, graduate from high school and attend college, earn higher wages, and grow to be healthy adults. <\/em><\/strong>Photo: semeevent\/Pixabay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By ROZ BROWN<\/strong><br>Texas News Service<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 The combination of COVID-19 job loss and employer-provided health insurance is hitting Texas families hard, but many are eligible for health coverage under Medicaid if they sign up and meet income eligibility guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Texas has the highest rate of uninsured residents and children in the nation, but state lawmakers nonetheless have declined to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Melissa McChesney, policy analyst for the Health and Wellness Team at the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/forabettertexas.org\/\">Texas Center for Public Policy Priorities<\/a>, said that when uninsured people get sick, they often wait too long to see a doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat has cost implications for that particular person, as that\u2019s a much more expensive way to treat that illness as opposed to going to a doctor when they first got sick,\u201d she said. \u201cBut also, it\u2019s more expensive overall for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s estimated the cost of COVID treatment for someone uninsured can top $30,000, which could lead some people to skip testing or delay getting medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Texans can learn more about benefits that might be available during the current health crisis, including Medicaid, SNAP food assistance and the Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program, at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yourtexasbenefits.com\/\">YourTexasBenefits.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kidshealthcarereport.ccf.georgetown.edu\/states\/texas\/\">Georgetown University report<\/a>, the number of uninsured children in Texas increased 16% between 2016 and 2018. McChesney said it keeps rising because many families earn too much for Medicaid eligibility, but not enough to purchase coverage through the Affordable Care Act.
