{"id":11923,"date":"2020-07-30T16:33:07","date_gmt":"2020-07-30T16:33:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=11923"},"modified":"2020-07-30T16:33:08","modified_gmt":"2020-07-30T16:33:08","slug":"texas-college-offers-new-curriculum-for-social-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=11923","title":{"rendered":"Texas college offers new curriculum for social change"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"980\" height=\"654\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/gr-70901-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11921\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/gr-70901-1-1.jpg 980w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/gr-70901-1-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/gr-70901-1-1-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>Some education experts anticipate that more college and university students will consider learning online as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/em><\/strong> Photo: jagritparajuli99\/Pixabay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By ROZ BROWN<br><\/strong>Texas News Service<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DALLAS &#8212; The death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis two months ago has accelerated the launch of a new learning program by a school in Dallas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/pqc-edu.squarespace.com\/urbanscholars\">Urban Scholars Program was in the works at Paul Quinn College<\/a>, but became more urgent with Floyd&#8217;s death, as the historically Black college addresses challenges facing urban communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben Nelson, CEO and founder Minerva Project, the company that helped design the curriculum, says many high achieving students now have a keen sense of purpose &#8212; and they want college to provide them with tools to help them change society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This country needs more than just changing names on football teams and maple syrup, and much more about fixing the problems that we face,&#8221; Nelson states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to educational requirements, a big component of the Urban Scholars Program is employment &#8212; with students expected to work 15 to 20 hours a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 550 students attend Paul Quinn College each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who enroll in the program will study how to close the multi-generational wealth gap, end the prison-industrial complex, or provide equitable and affordable health care to all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nelson says many students don&#8217;t want four years of lecture halls &#8212; and instead, want to earn a degree that engages them in tackling real world problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;To solve, or help ameliorate, some of the great disparities that our society faces around wealth, access to health care, around treatment by the criminal justice system,&#8221; he states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nelson say the Urban Scholars Program will offer a fully online 36-month undergraduate degree in business administration and public policy designed to educate a &#8220;new generation of change-makers.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Support for this reporting was made possible by Lumina Foundation.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By ROZ BROWNTexas News Service DALLAS &#8212; The death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis two months ago has accelerated the launch of a new learning program by a school in Dallas.
