{"id":11969,"date":"2020-08-06T18:13:36","date_gmt":"2020-08-06T18:13:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=11969"},"modified":"2020-08-13T16:22:27","modified_gmt":"2020-08-13T16:22:27","slug":"los-fresnos-youngsters-push-for-safer-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=11969","title":{"rendered":"Los Fresnos youngsters push for safer road"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Road-photo-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Road-photo-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Road-photo-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Road-photo.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>Youngsters King and Price Vela pose with the poster they presented to the Cameron County Commissioner\u2019s Court as Administrative assistant Raul Gomez and Office Specialist Celia Gonzalez look on. <\/em><\/strong>Photo: Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By TONY VINDELL<br><\/strong>LFN<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LOS FRESNOS &#8211; What started out as a project to make a narrow road safer on the north side of Los Fresnos ended as a mission accomplished for a local family and some of their neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those involved in the project included several youngsters ages 8 to 13.<br>The children are King Vela, Prince Vela, Jeremiah Alba, Jeanette Alba, Jimena Salazar and Brenda Delgado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dee Sanchez said she and her children started earlier this year to pay attention to both the foot and vehicular traffic on Whipple Road, a narrow stretch on the north side of Los Fresnos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said they presented a class project and even circulated a petition on how to try to make the road safer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At one time they thought about presenting the project to the Los Fresnos City Council, but instead took it up a notch and went before the Cameron County Commissioners\u2019 Court since Los Fresnos is within Commissioner David Garza\u2019s Precinct 3 jurisdiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To their surprise, Sanchez said they found out recently that a project to upgrade Whipple Road is in the works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it\u2019s coming along rather slowly, the commission recently approved building a sidewalk on the east end of the road at North Arroyo Boulevard, or FM 1847 to FM 1575 on the west end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to that, the Texas Department of Transportation plans to upgrade the road in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether their project contributed to that or not, Sanchez said the family and friends are thrilled that Whipple Road has been getting the attention it needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe used to live at Paseo Pointe Apartments and our children go to Los Fresnos schools,\u201d she said. \u201cWe hope Whipple Road becomes a safer road for everybody.
