We use these words interchangeably, but there is a difference in their meanings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pruning is usually the term used for working with trees. If wind storms have broken branches, you need to prune the damaged limbs to keep the tree in shape and healthy. It is \u201cselective removal of parts of the plant\u201d- like broken or diseased branches, limbs that are hitting the house, or reducing the density of branches to prevent breakage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"866\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gate-1-866x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gate-1-866x1024.jpg 866w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gate-1-254x300.jpg 254w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gate-1-768x908.jpg 768w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gate-1.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>Trees should be pruned so that foliage isn\u2019t only on the end of the branch, which would cause the branch to break from the weight. <\/em><\/strong>Photos: Ann Johnston \/ LFN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Suggestion:<\/strong> Make your cut vertically or diagonally with the cut side down to prevent water from sitting on the cut area and rotting the wood. This applies to trimming roses and other bushes also.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trimming involves shrubs and hedges. In our Magic Valley, it is probably done two times a year because of our year-round growing season. But it might need to be three times in a wet year like this one where Hurricane Hanna brought an excess of rain with 10-16 inches of water. Shrubs and bushes will need to be trimmed \u201cto retain shape and reduce plant size.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gate-2-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12126\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gate-2-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gate-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gate-2.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>This bush needs to be trimmed to regain its shape after growing fast from our recent rains. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Suggestion:<\/strong> Try to trim flowering shrubs after blooming. This might be difficult this year because the rain has also caused a reblooming on many of our native plants. If there is less rain, keep in mind that there are shrubs that bloom only on new growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thinning is done on seedlings \u201cto reduce the number of plants and allow growth of a select few.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gate-3-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gate-3-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gate-3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Gate-3.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption><em><strong>When trees need to be pruned, make the cuts vertical or diagonal with the cut on the underside to keep water from sitting on and rotting out the wood. <\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Suggestion: <\/strong>Pulling out unneeded seedlings could disturb the roots of its neighbors. They need the leave to grow (photosynthesis). Never \u201ctop off \u201c a tree!!
