{"id":12381,"date":"2020-11-12T18:21:18","date_gmt":"2020-11-12T18:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=12381"},"modified":"2020-11-12T18:21:19","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T18:21:19","slug":"federal-judge-rules-houston-drive-through-votes-count","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=12381","title":{"rendered":"Federal judge rules Houston drive-through votes count"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"980\" height=\"548\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/gr-72010-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/gr-72010-1-1.jpg 980w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/gr-72010-1-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/gr-72010-1-1-768x429.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>Texas is one of only five states that rejected widespread mail-in voting this year, even as deaths from COVID-19 approach 20,000 in the state.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Photo: aclutx.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By ROZ BROWN<br><\/strong>Texas News Service<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 A federal judge on Monday rejected an eleventh-hour effort to invalidate about 127,000 Houston votes cast at drive-through polling centers established because of the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GOP activists objected to expanded voting access in Harris County, a crucial Texas battleground where a record 1.4 million early votes already have been cast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andre Segura, legal director for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclutx.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Civil Liberties Union of Texas<\/a>, maintained the lawsuit was frivolous and should have been thrown out immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think at this point we\u2019re really seeing increasingly desperate attempts by officials as Texas becomes a real voting state,\u201d Segura contended. \u201cBut I don\u2019t think there\u2019s anything that you can do to really stop the energy that people have here in Texas to go out and vote.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 10 million people have cast early ballots in Texas, where turnout historically has been among the lowest in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday\u2019s ruling mirrored that of the conservative Texas Supreme Court, which rejected an identical lawsuit last month and in a weekend ruling refused to invalidate the votes already cast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grace Chimene, president of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/my.lwv.org\/texas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">League of Women Voters of Texas<\/a>, which was a party to the lawsuit, added curbside voting is available under Texas election law, guaranteed to those who are \u201cphysically unable to enter the polling place without personal assistance or likelihood of injuring the voter\u2019s health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDo not mess with the voters with a disability, that\u2019s for sure,\u201d Chimene emphasized. \u201cThe state of Texas has done it before and we will not put up with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this fall, the Texas governor limited ballot dropboxes to one per county, a decision the courts allowed to stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision meant Harris County, with a population of nearly five million, had only one dropbox for an area covering more than 1,700 square miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Support for this reporting was provided by The Carnegie Corporation of New York.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By ROZ BROWNTexas News Service AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 A federal judge on Monday rejected an eleventh-hour effort to invalidate about 127,000 Houston votes cast at drive-through polling centers established because of the pandemic.
