{"id":12394,"date":"2020-11-19T18:10:26","date_gmt":"2020-11-19T18:10:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=12394"},"modified":"2020-11-19T18:10:26","modified_gmt":"2020-11-19T18:10:26","slug":"los-fresnos-nature-park-hike-bike-trail-projects-going-well","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=12394","title":{"rendered":"Los Fresnos nature park, hike &#038; bike trail projects going well"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By TONY VINDELL<br><\/strong>LFN<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Naturepark1-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12400\" width=\"327\" height=\"489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Naturepark1-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Naturepark1-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>These monarch butterflies are already taking advantage of the garden built to attract these beautiful insects. <\/em><\/strong>Photo: Tony Vindell \/ LFN<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Los Fresnos Nature Park and its sister Hike &amp; Bike Trail are two projects the city will soon have completed for the benefit of those who enjoy the great outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After more than two years in the making, the park is nearing completion while Phase One of the inner city 1.75-mile trail is getting off the ground and is set to be constructed by next spring or summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>City Manager Mark Milum gave an update of the two projects during a Live Symposium hosted by UTRGV Environmental Studies Center on Tuesday, Oct. 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the $1.5-million plus park has a walking trail, exercise stations, outdoor amphitheater and two bird blinds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The park\u2019s latest addition is a butterfly garden planted with about a dozen plants and shrubs, including lantanas, milkweed, scorpion tails and white orchid trees, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The garden is already attracting monarchs and queen butterflies flying acrobatically from flower to flower in the search of food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funding for the park came from a combination of state and local grants, $728,000 of which came from the Coastal Impact Assistance Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"980\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Naturepark2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Naturepark2.jpg 980w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Naturepark2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Naturepark2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><figcaption><strong><em>One of the blinds at Los Frenos Nature Park visitors can now use for watching native and migrating birds. <\/em><\/strong>Photo: Tony Vindell \/ LFN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Other grant allocations came from the Texas Park &amp; Wildlife Department, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and from the city and the Community Development Corp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hike and bike trail is being built also with more than $1 million altogether from Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation and the entities mentioned above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trail will ultimately link Los Fresnos with Downtown Brownsville via the Cara Cara Trail under construction along the Palo Alto Historical Battlefield Park.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By TONY VINDELLLFN The Los Fresnos Nature Park and its sister Hike &amp; Bike Trail are two projects the city will soon have completed for the benefit of those who enjoy the great outdoors.
