Wade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/gr-72388-1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"314\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/gr-72388-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/gr-72388-1-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/gr-72388-1-1-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><strong><em>Forty-three percent of Texas women live in counties with no abortion clinic, according to Pro-Choice America\/Texas<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0Photo: commondreams.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By ROZ BROWN<\/strong><br>Texas News Service<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 New Mexico and Colorado are likely to become major destinations for Texas women seeking an abortion if the conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the 1973 Roe versus Wade decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aimee Arrambide, executive director for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/prochoicetexas.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NARAL Pro-Choice Texas<\/a>&nbsp;said women there already had a preview of what future abortion access could look like when the governor and attorney general used COVID-19 quarantine measures to block access to abortion care under the guise of public health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo for about a month, abortion was completely inaccessible in Texas,\u201d Arrambide explained. \u201cAnd what we saw is an increase in Texans traveling to states where it was more accessible, like New Mexico or Colorado.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ten states, including Texas, currently have abortion \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/state-policy\/explore\/abortion-policy-absence-roe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trigger laws<\/a>,\u201d meaning abortion bans or restrictions that are unenforceable now but designed to go into effect if constitutional precedent changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brandi Collins-Calhoun, senior movement engagement associate for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncrp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy<\/a>, noted abortion rights activists across the nation projected a post-Roe world since the appointment of anti-abortion justice Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been using language around when Roe gets overturned because it\u2019s something that has always seemed inevitable to us,\u201d Collins-Calhoun remarked. \u201cBut now it\u2019s certain that it\u2019s going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arrambide contended the Texas Legislature is controlled by anti-abortion legislators who don\u2019t acknowledge what severe restrictions will mean for women\u2019s access to health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne in four people will have an abortion in our lifetime, but because of the stigma surrounding abortion, that\u2019s not really front and center,\u201d Arrambide asserted. \u201cThe anti-abortion people use the word abortion four-to-one times more than our side does, and I think that helps contribute to the stigma.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Texas Legislature is set to convene mid-January, and a Senate committee previewed bills this week it plans to introduce including a \u201cheartbeat bill\u201d to ban abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By ROZ BROWNTexas News Service AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 New Mexico and Colorado are likely to become major destinations for Texas women seeking an abortion if the conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the 1973 Roe versus Wade decision.
