{"id":12564,"date":"2020-12-31T16:59:45","date_gmt":"2020-12-31T16:59:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=12564"},"modified":"2020-12-31T16:59:46","modified_gmt":"2020-12-31T16:59:46","slug":"los-fresnos-progressing-by-leaps-and-bounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=12564","title":{"rendered":"Los Fresnos progressing by leaps and bounds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/city.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/city.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/city.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/city-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><strong><em>Los Fresnos City Manager Mark Milium talks during a recent presentation about the city\u2019s Nature Park and the new hike and bike trail under construction.<\/em> <\/strong>Photo: Tony Vindell \/ LFN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By TONY VINDELL<br><\/strong>LFN<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The City of Los Fresnos keeps progressing by leaps and bounds and will continue doing so as it has been for quite some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent update of how this city along Texas Highway 100 and Paredes Line Road has been doing on all fronts, City Manager Mark Milum gave a detailed presentation of the changes the city has been experiencing from fiscal year 2004 to 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, such as its property tax revenue went from $624,000 to a little more than $2 million \u2013 an increase of 223 percent over that period.<br>The city\u2019s sales taxes went from $326,358 to nearly $1,250,000 \u2013 a hike of 282 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As to its fund balance, the city had $423,118 in 2004, compared to more than $1.5 million 15 years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milum gave the report during a meeting to welcome Mayor Alejandro \u201cAlex\u201d Flores and to applaud former city councilwoman Yolanda Cruz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city manager reminded Cruz she served on the city council over much of those years of his report, and thanked her for her contribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other significant aspects of how the city has been growing has been its franchise tax, its revenues from water and sewer services and in the Los Fresnos Economic Development Corp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The franchise tax went from $139,917 in 2004 to $390,073 in 2019 \u2013 up by 179 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In sewer and water revenues, the city went from $1.1 million to more than $3 million during the same period \u2013 a 176 percent increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CDC had $141,455 in 2004, compared to $408,656 in 2019 \u2013 a 189 percent hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milum said the city\u2019s payroll grew from 34 employees to 60 during that time resulting in an increase of 76 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also said Los Fresnos no longer has a reputation of being one of Texas\u2019 infamous speed traps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milum stated that the city collected $501,445 in traffic fines back in 2004, compared to $507, 557 in 2019 \u2013 or the second lowest increase of all the figures he provided at the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traffic fine collection rose by 14 percent, whereas the city\u2019s city property tax rate went from 0.69 per $100 of valuation to 0.715 19 years later &#8211; an increase of 4 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the 4 percent increase, it\u2019s worth noticing such a rate has remained unchanged since 2006.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By TONY VINDELLLFN The City of Los Fresnos keeps progressing by leaps and bounds and will continue doing so as it has been for quite some time.
