{"id":12566,"date":"2020-12-31T17:02:05","date_gmt":"2020-12-31T17:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=12566"},"modified":"2020-12-31T17:02:06","modified_gmt":"2020-12-31T17:02:06","slug":"los-fresnos-organic-farms-provide-healthy-foodstuffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=12566","title":{"rendered":"Los Fresnos organic farms provide healthy foodstuffs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/organic-farm022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/organic-farm022.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/organic-farm022.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/organic-farm022-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><strong><em>Farm workers clean a cilantro field along Henderson Road.<\/em> <\/strong>Photos: Tony Vindell \/ LFN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By TONY VINDELL<br><\/strong>LFN<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s true that Los Fresnos has been known as a bedroom community throughout the Rio Grande Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to that, the city has been getting notoriety as being the home of the \u201cThe Biggest Little Rodeo in Texas\u201d now for more than 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But did you know this area is also home to some of the best and largest organic farms in the whole region?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just take a drive along Henderson, Stanford and Whipple roads to find out what role this sector of the farming industry plays here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acres upon acres of agri-land are cultivated every year with winter vegetables such as cilantro, broccoli, lettuce, parsley, chard, beets, onions and other crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each product is certified as organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and are members of the Go Texan campaign created to promote the Lone Star State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/organic-farm029.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"796\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/organic-farm029.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/organic-farm029.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/organic-farm029-226x300.jpg 226w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em><strong>A bunch of organically-grown cilantro ready for the consumers market.<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these products end up in healthy food stores and in some supermarkets all over the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now, cilantro is being harvested in some of the fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farm workers cut the top of each plant and tie it with a wire and a tag that reads Organic Cilantro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The product is then placed in a plastic container for shipping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark Miller, a Los Fresnos resident and one of three investors in the business venture called Tenaza Farms, said the products are sold at a couple of supermarket chains and at some food specialty shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRight now we are harvesting cilantro,\u201d he said. \u201cNext is collard greens.\u201d<br>Besides Miller, the other partners are Mike Ortiz of Rancho Viejo and Californian Jed Murray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBusiness has been good,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have been doing this for eight or nine years now.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By TONY VINDELLLFN It\u2019s true that Los Fresnos has been known as a bedroom community throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
