Study reveals best technique"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/gr-72645-1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/gr-72645-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/gr-72645-1-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/gr-72645-1-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em><strong>Nearly 90% of people say they\u2019ve experienced an \u201cearworm\u201d \u2013 when a song, for instance, gets stuck in the brain and interferes with productivity or sleep.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Photo: tookapic\/Pixabay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>By ROZ BROWN<\/strong><br>Texas News Service<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2013 People use a variety of methods to stop thinking about things that make them uncomfortable, but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-020-20085-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new research<\/a>&nbsp;shows one method works better than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study, from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Colorado, showed that a person who consciously thinks of something else or uses techniques to clear their mind will have some success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jarrod Lewis-Peacock, a cognitive neuroscientist at&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.utexas.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UT Austin<\/a>, said each method affects the brain differently \u2013 but a third strategy appears to be the most effective in making room for new thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt turns out only \u2018active suppression\u2019 \u2013 the act of pushing away the thought \u2013 really seemed to work,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s the only one that appeared to get rid of that thought for good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the study, he said, researchers examined brain activity in 60 volunteers. The research combined novel brain imaging with machine learning techniques to determine which method is best for decluttering unwanted thoughts \u2013 replacing, clearing or suppressing them. The findings were published this month in the journal Nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lewis-Peacock said insight into cognition could help inform new therapies for mental-health issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. He added that it also could provide clues for how to form better study habits or innovate at work, but said there\u2019s much more to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOK, so we\u2019re understanding the different ways the brain can expunge information,\u201d he said. \u201cHow much does it matter what type of information it is?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that getting stuck or ruminating over something \u2013 whether it\u2019s a fight with a friend or an offending email \u2013 is at the root of many mental-health disorders.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By ROZ BROWNTexas News Service AUSTIN, Texas \u2013 People use a variety of methods to stop thinking about things that make them uncomfortable, but&nbsp;new research&nbsp;shows one method works better than others.
