(Texas A&amp;M AgriLife photo by Laura McKenzie)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Written by Paul Schattenberg<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the summer, people tend to spend more time outdoors for longer periods of time, which can lead to a higher risk of a heat-related illness, such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>The American College of Emergency Physicians reports that each year there are hundreds of fatalities and countless emergency department visits due to heat-related illnesses. Older adults, babies and young children, as well as those with medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or obesity, are particularly susceptible to the heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cWe recommend everyone, especially if they are at a high-risk for heat-related illness, to be aware of the symptoms of heat stress, especially heat exhaustion and heat stroke,\u201d said Mike Lopez, DrPH, Texas A&amp;M AgriLife Extension Service health program specialist in the agency\u2019s Family and Community Health Unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cHowever, anyone can succumb to heat, especially in humid conditions and in combination with outdoor activity,\u201d Lopez said. \u201cPlus, you have to consider other factors that may be at play such as drinking alcohol, inadequate hydration and possible reactions from medication.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heat exhaustion cause, symptoms<\/strong><br>AgriLife Extension specialist Debra Kellstedt, DrPH, said the body naturally heats up during physical activity but normally keeps itself cool by sweating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cHowever, in cases of extreme heat and high humidity, the body heats up faster than it can sufficiently sweat in order to maintain a temperature in the normal range,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Heat exhaustion is the result of an excessive loss of water and\/or salt, usually as a result of excessive sweating, Kellstedt said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Sun-RudyHiking-1024x683-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Sun-RudyHiking-1024x683-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15164\" width=\"840\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Sun-RudyHiking-1024x683-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Sun-RudyHiking-1024x683-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Sun-RudyHiking-1024x683-1-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Heat exhaustion can occur when the body heats up faster than its ability to cool down. (Texas A&amp;M AgriLife photo by Courtney Sacco)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Some heat exhaustion symptoms can include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tiredness or weakness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agitation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Headache.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dizziness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cold, pale and clammy skin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tingling skin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fast, weak pulse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fast, shallow breathing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heavy sweating.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nausea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Muscle cramps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cIn more serious instances, heat exhaustion can also cause vomiting or fainting,\u201d she said.<br>To address heat exhaustion, Lopez said it is best to sip cool water, relocate to a cooler area, loosen your clothing and put a wet cloth or cool compress on key areas of the body, such as the forehead, neck and armpits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cIf there is vomiting, extreme weakness or the symptoms get worse and last more than an hour, you should seek medical help,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Heat stroke symptoms<\/strong><br>Heat stroke is the most severe heat-related illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (Texas A&amp;M AgriLife photo by Michael Miller)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Additional heat stroke symptoms can include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Headache.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weakness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confusion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dizziness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agitation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slurred speech.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hot, red, skin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fast, strong pulse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nausea.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vomiting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of consciousness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>If a person has these symptoms, Lopez said it should be regarded as a medical emergency and to immediately call 911.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>He also encourages moving the person to a shaded, cool area or into an air-conditioned space and trying to lower the body\u2019s temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>\u201cCool the individual with water\u201d he said. \u201cWet the skin and place cool, wet clothes or compresses on key points, such as the head, neck and armpits.
