During the Los Fresnos CISD Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, 49 students from Los Fresnos High School were honored for earning the College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) designation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


The College Board created this National Recognition Program to recognize academic achievement among student populations that are often underrepresented at the university level. To be eligible, students need to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, a PSAT assessment score that is within the Top 10% of assessment takers, or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP exams in 9th and 10th grade.
Mr. Justin Stumbaugh, principal of Los Fresnos High School, introduced the students by saying, \u201cThese programs celebrate student\u2019s hard work in high school and showcase their strong academic performance.\u201d He also mentioned, \u201cthese academic honors are an opportunity for these students to share their strong academic achievements with colleges and scholarship programs that are seeking to recruit diverse talent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Eligible students are invited to apply during their sophomore or junior year, and are awarded at the start of the next school year. Although this is not a scholarship program, students can include these honors in their college and scholarship applications. Universities and organizations use the College Board\u2019s Students Search Service and can connect directly with the awardees during the recruitment process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


When asked what it meant to be recognized with this designation, one of the proud honorees, Jessenia Garcia (junior), explained, \u201cBy being recognized, it has reassured me that I\u2019m on the right track to succeed in my future. I feel like I am representing my community and showing that we can accomplish anything we want!\u201d Jonas Apacible (senior), another student that was recognized, added, \u201cThis wasn\u2019t just an award. This is proof the RGV can keep up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Students were recognized and congratulated along with their parents by the Board President, the Board of Trustees, and the Superintendent. \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to celebrate our students and recognize them for the great work they\u2019ve been doing.\u201d said Laura Trevino, Higher Education Coordinator for the Los Fresnos High School College Center. \u201cThere\u2019s so much that makes our students unique, and receiving this honor reinforces this as an asset for their future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
