Leonardo ‘Leo’ Aguillar was a highly active student during his high school years from 1967 to 1970 in Los Fresnos. He was deeply involved in several school activities, including being the president of the Spanish club and representing the Future Homemakers of America. Leo was also an active member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, where he served as the president of the Catholic youth organization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his senior year of high school, Leo accomplished his dream of playing football for the Los Fresnos Fighting Falcons. He was a starting fullback on the team and had a bright future ahead of him. However, in September 1970, Leo’s life was tragically cut short. During a routine football practice, he suffered a severe neck injury that required hospitalization. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Leo passed away on October 10, 1970, at the young age of 17. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Leo’s life was short, his legacy lives on. To honor his memory and commitment to his community, Leo’s four brothers founded the Leo Aguillar Foundation in 1971. The foundation aims to continue Leo’s legacy by awarding scholarships to deserving Los Fresnos High School seniors each year. Initially, the foundation offered only one athletic scholarship. However, it has now expanded to include eight total scholarships, including two athletic scholarships and six academic scholarships. Today, the foundation hosts an annual 5k walk\/run and golf tournament to raise funds for its scholarship programs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 9, 2024, the 38th Annual Leo Aguillar Memorial Golf Tournament took place at the River Bend Resort and Golf Course in Brownsville. The tournament featured a 3-person best ball format with 18 holes of golf and golf carts. Trophies were awarded in two flights, and participants competed for the nearest to the pin. Lunch was provided for all paid participants. The day’s agenda included registration at 7 am and an 8 am shotgun start, followed by lunch at 12:30 pm. Awards and door prizes were distributed throughout the event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leo’s love\u00a0for\u00a0his community and passion\u00a0for\u00a0football inspired his brothers to\u00a0establish\u00a0the\u00a0Leo\u00a0Aguillar\u00a0Foundation. Since its establishment,\u00a0the\u00a0foundation\u00a0has awarded scholarships to deserving students, totaling over $8,000 this past year.
