On Friday, February 21, 2025, Mariachi Nuevo Halc\u00f3n from Los Fresnos proudly represented their community at the prestigious UIL State Mariachi Competition held in Seguin, Texas. This event was part of the highly anticipated 2025 UIL State Mariachi Festival, which took place from February 20 to 22 at the Seguin High School Performing Arts Center, a venue known for its exceptional acoustics and vibrant cultural atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s festival marked an exciting milestone, being the ninth annual state mariachi contest and the sixth year it has been officially recognized by the University Interscholastic League (UIL). The competition attracted an impressive lineup of mariachi ensembles from across the state, with a total of 97 schools participating, showcasing the rich musical heritage of Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mariachi Nuevo Halc\u00f3n delivered an outstanding performance, enchanting the audience and judges alike with their renditions of \u201cTema\/Toro Josco,\u201d \u201cBonita Como Mi Madre,\u201d and \u201cLlegaste T\u00fa.\u201d With their exceptional talent and dedication, the group achieved a Superior Division 1 Rating, a prestigious honor that reflected their hard work and artistry. They received perfect scores, or straight ones, from all three judges\u2014an achievement that only five schools out of 27 could claim during the session. This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to the exceptional leadership of their directors, who have meticulously guided the ensemble through their preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In preparation for the competition, all participating groups were required to follow strict performance regulations. Each performance was limited to a maximum of 10 minutes, requiring groups to carefully select their repertoire. Competitors were mandated to include a son in the style of son jalisciense, known for its lively rhythms and traditional Mexican roots, as well as one additional selection in a contrasting style to demonstrate versatility. Awards distributed at the festival included the coveted Division 1 rating, along with accolades for Distinguished Performance and Exemplary Performer, highlighting the exceptional talent present in the mariachi community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
