His smile was contagious, and everyone could easily see that he was a very happy four-year-old.<br \/>\nHis seat is now empty in the Pre-Kindergarten classroom.<\/p>\n<p>Joaquin was born with critical congenital heart disease on July 9, 2009. He had his first heart surgery at seven days old, the second at six months old, and the third recently at Driscoll Children\u2019s Hospital in Corpus Christi. He died Oct. 4.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers, classmates, family and friends gathered at OES cafeteria Wednesday for \u201cJoaquin Salazar: A Celebration of Life.\u201d A photo gallery of the event is posted on the district website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lfcisd.net\" target=\"_blank\">www.lfcisd.net<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Joaquin\u2019s parents, Paul and Christina Salazar of Brownsville, also spoke at the one-hour ceremony, which was highlighted by the release of balloons including a balloon arch that spelled J-O-A-Q-U-I-N.<\/p>\n<p>Joaquin attended OES in the Pre-School Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) as a 3-year-old during the 2012-13 school year and as a 4-year-old to start the current year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1992\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1992\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1992\" alt=\"Joaquin Salazar\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/10186114214_9c1b2c8305_b.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/10186114214_9c1b2c8305_b.jpg 300w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/10186114214_9c1b2c8305_b-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1992\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joaquin Salazar<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Eric Juarez, who was his teacher both years, also gave an emotional talk about Joaquin\u2019s love for school. Principal Linda Rodriguez also addressed the audience and two videos and a slide show about Joaquin\u2019s life were presented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis love knew no limits or age and despite being faced with incredible challenges, he faced everything with that sweet smile,\u201d his mother Christina said. \u201cLet us remember that there are a lot of children like Joaquin who wake up each morning faced with adversity.\u00a0In the brief time he spent here with his family and friends, he managed to impact us all in a mighty way.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joaquin Salazar loved attending Olmito Elementary School.
