Photo: Bill Holsinger-Robinson.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>AUSTIN, Texas &#8211; The election season had Texas voters taking it all in \u201cwith a grain of salt,\u201d but with the coming holidays they\u2019re being urged to go the other way and \u201chold the salt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those who have far too much sodium in their diets can be at an increased risk of health issues. Registered dietitian Lori Jones says while many have done a good job cutting back on salt in foods they prepare at home, most just don\u2019t do as much of their own cooking these days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have a lot of control over what is in our food when we eat out, so we\u2019re picking up a lot of sodium there,\u201d says Jones. \u201cWe\u2019re also into convenience &#8211; so, we\u2019re using a lot of prepackaged, processed foods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones says too much sodium can increase a person\u2019s risk for high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease and other major health problems.<br \/>\nJones adds, unfortunately, the consequences of a high-sodium diet are no longer limited to adults.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re starting to see high blood pressure in younger ages, like teenage years,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you have a child that\u2019s overweight, having a high-salt diet may push them toward high blood pressure at an earlier age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 90 percent of U.S. children eat more sodium than recommended, and about one in six children has raised blood pressure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTIN, Texas &#8211; The election season had Texas voters taking it all in \u201cwith a grain of salt,\u201d but with the coming holidays they\u2019re being urged to go the other way and \u201chold the salt.\u201d Those who have far too much sodium in their diets can be at an increased risk of health issues.
