Factors that increase your risk for dental decay are:<\/p>\n<p>1-Dietary: \u00a0Better eating habits means better checkups. Avoid frequent snacks &amp; sweetened drinks that expose teeth to damaging acids produced by oral bacteria. \u00a0Note: \u00a0sugars &amp; starches are most harmful. \u00a0Popular choices that contain sugar include: specialty coffees, sodas and juices, &amp; breath mints. \u00a0Beware of \u201chidden\u201d sugars and starches found in many \u201chealth\u201d items such as Calcium Supplements &amp; Vitamin C Chewables, Antacids, Cough Remedies, Protein Bars\/Drinks, Weight Loss Bars\/Drinks, \u00a0&amp; Canned Nutritional Supplements.<\/p>\n<p>2-Tobacco Use: Using tobacco products, especially sweet chewing tobacco, challenges your immune system &amp; increases oral problems. \u00a0Also, tobacco products can damage gums &amp; teeth &amp; lead to gum recession. \u00a0Another significant effect of tobacco products is that it may lead to oral cancer.<\/p>\n<p>3-Dental Factors: \u00a0Your past or current dental conditions can mean a greater risk for cavities. \u00a0Here are some examples: \u00a0Gum Recession, Orthodontic Appliance, Dry Mouth, (Saliva is essential for cleansing the teeth &amp; neutralizing acids produced by oral bacteria) Oral Hygiene, &amp; Acidic Mouth (frequent vomiting).<\/p>\n<p>4-Medical Factors: \u00a0Certain medications &amp; conditions can increase your risk of tooth decay. \u00a0Prescription &amp; over-the-counter meds that lead to dry mouth include those used to treat: High blood pressure, Allergies, Depression\/Anxiety, Cancer, &amp; Digestive disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Patients of all ages benefit from fluoride treatments. \u00a0Adults are especially prone to rapidly developing root cavities. \u00a0Professionally applied fluoride treatments are recommended for both adults &amp; children &amp; can reduce cavities by 30%. \u00a0Even as an adult, there are some things you never outgrow&#8230; like cavities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2488\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/July2013_Ad1.gif\" alt=\"July2013_Ad1\" style=\"border:0px\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Q: \u00a0What factors increase your risk for dental decay?
