{"id":3862,"date":"2015-07-02T18:24:40","date_gmt":"2015-07-02T18:24:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=3862"},"modified":"2015-07-10T18:25:59","modified_gmt":"2015-07-10T18:25:59","slug":"struggle-for-reproductive-rights-not-over-in-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=3862","title":{"rendered":"Struggle for Reproductive Rights Not Over in Texas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>by Eric Galatas\/TNS<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AUSTIN, Texas &#8211; Women\u2019s health advocates in Texas are breathing a collective sigh of relief, after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the state to delay a new law that would have closed all but nine of the clinics in Texas that perform abortion services.<\/p>\n<p>House Bill 2, passed in 2013, forces clinics to comply with hospital-like standards. If the high court hadn\u2019t intervened, the law would have gone into effect yesterday, leaving an area of the state 550 miles wide without an abortion provider.<\/p>\n<p>Susan Hays, an attorney with NARAL Pro-Choice Texas, praised the court\u2019s action.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3863\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3863\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3863\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/gr-46962-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Women\u2019s health organizations are mobilizing after the U.S. Supreme Court delayed a new Texas law that would leave the state with fewer than 10 clinics providing abortion services. Photo: Night Owl\/Wikimedia Commons.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cTexas is a huge state, and there are no more abortion clinics in most of the western third of it,\u201d she says. \u201cThis law would\u2019ve closed the clinics in El Paso, leaving Texans without clinics west of San Antonio, Dallas-Fort Worth or Austin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hays points out the delay is only temporary, until the Supreme Court can review the case. The Texas governor\u2019s office says it sees the move as part of the court\u2019s ongoing \u201cattack on state\u2019s rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If the high court determines the law puts an undue burden on women seeking abortion, it could decide to hear oral arguments as early as next spring.<\/p>\n<p>Hays says the prospect of denying some Texas women access to health services is having a galvanizing effect on the movement for reproductive rights. She\u2019s convinced public opinion does have a role to play in how the high court might rule, and points to the recent decision on marriage equality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith access to safe abortion services, American public opinion really hasn\u2019t changed much over the last several decades,\u201d she says. \u201cMost people don\u2019t want to second-guess the healthcare decision-making of a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NARAL Pro-Choice Texas says the next several steps include educating residents about abortion restrictions in the state, and ultimately electing candidates who support women\u2019s reproductive rights.<\/p>\n<p>Hays admits it\u2019s a long-term strategy, but says this week\u2019s Supreme Court action gives the movement something to build on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Eric Galatas\/TNS AUSTIN, Texas &#8211; Women\u2019s health advocates in Texas are breathing a collective sigh of relief, after the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the state to delay a new law that would have closed all but nine of the clinics in Texas that perform abortion services.
