{"id":4471,"date":"2015-11-20T20:42:36","date_gmt":"2015-11-20T20:42:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=4471"},"modified":"2015-11-20T20:42:36","modified_gmt":"2015-11-20T20:42:36","slug":"detained-women-face-retaliation-for-hunger-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=4471","title":{"rendered":"Detained Women Face Retaliation for Hunger Strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>by Eric Galatas<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AUSTIN, Texas<\/strong> &#8211; Detained women seeking asylum in the U.S., who launched a hunger strike last week, are facing retaliation from ICE agents, according to the advocacy group Grassroots Leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Cristina Parker, who directs the group\u2019s immigration programs, says some strikers have been placed in solitary confinement and others relocated to all-male facilities.<\/p>\n<p>She points out most women at the T. Photo: PhanuwatNandee\/iStockphoto<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThese women who have come to our country to seek asylum are being held in these for-profit facilities, and it\u2019s you and I who pay for that,\u201d she stresses. \u201cOur tax dollars go to these multi-billion-dollar companies &#8211; and for what, to abuse women who have come to the U.S. seeking help?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Corrections Corporation of America, the nation\u2019s largest private prison operator, runs the Hutto facility.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) denied the women are on hunger strike and maintains the facility does not have solitary confinement areas.<\/p>\n<p>Parker notes some strikers were removed from the general population and locked up alone in medical cells.<\/p>\n<p>Monica Morales says her mother went on strike after guards took away food she had purchased at the center\u2019s commissary, and gave her sour milk and a half-baked cake.<\/p>\n<p>She says her mother, Francisca Morales Macias, told her, \u201cIf they\u2019re going to treat us like animals, I might as well join the protest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Morales says her mother was moved to an all-male detention center on Monday, after the strike\u2019s ranks grew over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom went on hunger strike because she wants to be heard,\u201d Morales says. \u201cShe wants to be freed with her family here in the United States, because she\u2019s on her own in Mexico, and in danger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cristina Parker says she has been told almost all detainees have joined the strike, drinking only water &#8211; sometimes with sugar packets &#8211; to sustain themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The Hutto center\u2019s minimum quota is 500 detainees.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Eric Galatas AUSTIN, Texas &#8211; Detained women seeking asylum in the U.S., who launched a hunger strike last week, are facing retaliation from ICE agents, according to the advocacy group Grassroots Leadership.
