{"id":4509,"date":"2015-11-27T18:41:36","date_gmt":"2015-11-27T18:41:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=4509"},"modified":"2015-11-27T18:41:36","modified_gmt":"2015-11-27T18:41:36","slug":"texas-abortion-case-heads-to-u-s-supreme-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=4509","title":{"rendered":"Texas Abortion Case Heads to U.S. Supreme Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>by Eric Galatas<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>AUSTIN, Texas<\/strong> &#8211; On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to review a Texas case that could decide whether imposing regulations on abortion providers constitutes an undue burden by restricting patients\u2019 access.<\/p>\n<p>Terri Burke, executive director of the ACLU of Texas, applauded the move and says her organization and others will file amicus briefs with the court.<\/p>\n<p>Burke points to one brief already submitted by medical experts, including the American Medical Association, that says two provisions in HB2 &#8211; the Texas law in question &#8211; puts women\u2019s health at risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AMA and the American College of Obstetricians have opposed these laws,\u201d she says. \u201cThey have been united on this, because they recognize that these laws don\u2019t promote women\u2019s health.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4510\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4510\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4510\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/gr-48993-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"The ACLU of Texas and other groups plan to file amicus briefs with the U.S Supreme Court opposing a law they say limits access to abortion services. Photo: Agnostic Preacher\u2019s Kid\/Wikimedia Commons.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Burke says HB2 imposes far higher standards for clinics performing abortions than for more dangerous medical procedures. It requires clinics to have local hospital admitting privileges and meet the same building standards as ambulatory surgical centers.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Governor Greg Abbott said Texas will continue to \u201cfight for higher-quality healthcare standards for women,\u201d and is confident the Supreme Court will uphold the law.<\/p>\n<p>Burke says when HB2 was enacted in 2013, Texas had 40 clinics offering abortion services. If the high court allows the law to stand, only 10 clinics will remain to serve the state\u2019s 5.4 million women of reproductive age.<\/p>\n<p>According to Burke, the case isn\u2019t about promoting abortion, but about women being in charge of their own destiny.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving the opportunity to make a decision about whether they want to be a parent, when they want to be a parent, how they\u2019re going to be a parent,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s a private and personal decision that the government has no place in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burke says that since 2010, states have passed almost 300 measures restricting access to abortion, with more than 50 adopted this year.<\/p>\n<p>Oral arguments in the case, Whole Woman\u2019s Health v.
