{"id":4954,"date":"2016-03-18T16:00:04","date_gmt":"2016-03-18T16:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=4954"},"modified":"2016-03-18T16:00:04","modified_gmt":"2016-03-18T16:00:04","slug":"texans-watch-closely-as-supreme-court-considers-abortion-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/?p=4954","title":{"rendered":"Texans Watch Closely as Supreme Court Considers Abortion Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>by Mark Richardson<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>AUSTIN, Texas<\/strong> &#8211; Pro-choice and anti-abortion groups listened carefully Wednesday as the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the Texas abortion law, House Bill 2 passed in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The law forces abortion clinics to meet higher standards, requiring doctors to gain admitting privileges at local hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>Lucy Stein, director of Advocacy for Progress Texas, says Justice Anthony Kennedy may be the difference in the court\u2019s ruling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKennedy is definitely, as anticipated, the swing decision, and we\u2019ll just have to wait and see,\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t think his line of questioning was necessarily dispositive of which way he\u2019s going to lean on this case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stein says Kennedy wanted to see more evidence regarding how the law was forcing the clinics to close, and said perhaps the case should go back to a lower court for more evidence.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4955\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4955\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4955\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/gr-50678-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Pro-choice and anti-abortion advocates gathered in front of the U.S. Supreme Court Wednesday as the justices heard oral arguments on a law that restricts abortions in Texas. Photo: TNS<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The court is split between four conservative justices, including Kennedy, and four liberal justices. Justice Antonin Scalia\u2019s death took a fifth vote from the conservative bloc.<\/p>\n<p>The measure\u2019s backers say the bill protects the health of women seeking abortions, but pro-choice groups say it has forced three out of four abortion clinics in Texas to close. Stein says a 4-4 vote could sustain the lower court\u2019s ruling and allow the restrictive law to go into effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are cautiously optimistic,\u201d says Stein. \u201cI mean, we have all this evidence on our side and we know what we\u2019re seeing on the ground here in Texas, that women are waiting longer, even in areas that have clinics.
