Summer vacation is coming to a close soon for Los Fresnos CISD students and teachers. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 15, for almost 11,000 students at the 14 campuses.<\/p>\n

While there are no new schools opening, there is a big change in 2016-17 that affects Los Fresnos High School and Los Fresnos United.<\/p>\n

LFU, which opened in 2009, has operated as a freshman campus for LFHS for seven years. Starting this fall, the school will house the district’s freshmen and sophomores, while LFHS will house juniors and seniors.<\/p>\n

LFU is expected to enroll about 1,800 students this school year, while LFHS enrollment will drop to about 1,500.<\/p>\n

Expansion of the LFU campus was completed from 2013-15, including a new two-story classroom building, new music building, athletic locker rooms and weight room, and dome gymnasium that was partially funded by FEMA to meet standards for a safe room to house people in the event of evacuations from a hurricane.<\/p>\n

Los Fresnos CISD teachers returned to their respective campuses Monday, Aug. 8. They were involved in staff development activities at their campuses and around the district Aug. 8-11, and have a Teacher Preparation Day this Friday, Aug. 12.<\/p>\n

Part of Staff Development is Convocation at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9 at the LFU Dome.<\/p>\n

First-year teachers and all teachers new to the district took part in a New Teacher Academy Aug. 3 and 4 at Rancho Verde Elementary School.<\/p>\n

There were four new campus principals, including: Justin Stumbaugh, Los Fresnos High School; Annice Garza, Liberty Memorial Middle School; Yliana Gonzalez, Los Cuates Middle School; and Pablo Leal, Villareal Elementary School<\/p>\n
