BROWNSVILLE, Texas \u2013<\/strong> The\u00a0Brownsville Museum of Fine Art<\/a>\u00a0is holding a Carlos G. G\u00f3mez Retrospective on Nov. 10, to celebrate the artist\u2019s more than 30 years as a\u00a0 professor of art at UTRGV and its legacy institution, UT Brownsville.<\/p>\n

Gomez died in January 2016, after succumbing to brain cancer. He had served as chair of the art department at UTB before the creation of UTRGV.<\/p>\n

His work was inspired by Mexican-American culture, heritage and immigration. Born in Mexico City, he grew up in Brownsville and got his bachelor\u2019s degree in art from Pan American University in Edinburg.<\/p>\n

Over the years, G\u00f3mez cemented his legacy as a productive, influential and passionate artist in the Lower Valley, mentoring and inspiring students at UTB, and later at UTRGV.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was fortunate enough to know Carlos G\u00f3mez for 10 years as a student, and then to have him as\u00a0colleague, and friend,\u201d said UTRGV Lecturer of Art Alejandro Macias.<\/p>\n

Macias said he is honored to be able to curate this retrospective of Gomez\u2019s body of work.<\/p>\n

\u201cBrownsville was his home,\u201d Macias said, \u201cand his colorful, powerful work deserves to be shown.\u201d<\/p>\n

The opening of the Gomez Retrospective coincides with the Museum\u2019s 10th Annual\u00a0Gala Reception, 6:30-11 p.m. Nov. 10.<\/p>\n

After the reception, the retrospective will be open to the public.\u00a0The exhibition will include work that spans Gomez\u2019s lifelong career, as well as tribute work from other artists.<\/p>\n
