BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS \u2013<\/strong>UTRGV is working with the City of Brownsville to shine a spotlight on the #subculture of artists who bring vibrant energy, sounds and colors to downtown Brownsville, starting at noon Saturday, Nov. 19, during the UTRGV #subculture: Urban Arts Experience event.<\/p>\n

UTRGV #Subculture will feature UTRGV students collaborating with area arts organizations and businesses \u2013 Brownsville Artists and Musicians (BAM!), Activating Vacancy Arts Incubator (AVAI), The Kraken Lounge and Main Street Brownsville District \u2013 in the heart of downtown Brownsville.<\/p>\n

The university\u2019s director of Public Relations, Jennifer McGehee-Valdez, who is spearheading the event, said UTRGV #subculture will highlight talented UTRGV students, who will be displaying their artwork and providing workshops for the public.<\/p>\n

The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

\u201c#Subculture means that UTRGV\u2019s artists, musicians and all creative walks of life are coming together to showcase their work and create an interactive environment,\u201d McGehee-Valdez said.<\/p>\n

From noon to 4 p.m., visitors can participate in workshops and interactive exhibits, from learning about printmaking to checking out photography and virtual reality presentations.<\/p>\n

The public can also enjoy food from local food trucks, and music will be by UTRGV Radio, and special guests.<\/p>\n

As part of the activities, the AVAI will hold a steamrolling printmaking event, in which art will be created using a steamroller as the press.<\/p>\n

#Subculture participants will be given a mock passport when they enter at Adams and 12th streets, which lets you collect a stamp for each workshop you attend and gives you a chance to win items. The first 200 participants to fill up their passport get a free T-shirt.<\/p>\n
