In January, UTRGV was named a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.utrgv.edu\/en-us\/about-utrgv\/news\/press-releases\/2017\/january-25-utrgv-named-collegenet-social-mobility-innovator-for-2017\/index.htm\">Social Mobility Innovator<\/a>\u00a0by CollegeNET Inc., and in February it was recognized in a Vox.com article titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2017\/2\/28\/14359140\/chetty-friedman-college-mobility\">These colleges are better than Harvard at making poor kids rich.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>University leaders say that for current and future UTRGV students, rankings like the ones mentioned mean that the education and training being offered by UTRGV can truly be life-changing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsn\u2019t that what higher education is all about,\u201d UTRGV President Guy Bailey said. \u201cWe tell students all the time that investing in higher education can lead to a better life for them and their families, and it\u2019s so satisfying to see that we\u2019re fulfilling that hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study \u2013 conducted by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.equality-of-opportunity.org\/college\/\">Equality of Opportunity Project<\/a>, a research group based out of Stanford University \u2013 looked at graduates of UTRGV legacy institution The University of Texas Pan American who attended between the years 2000 and 2011. UTPA ranked number five.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ranking confirms the significant impact of higher education on the quality of life of our students and their families. Obtaining a degree from UTRGV or our legacy institutions has had and will continue to have a big impact on our students and their families,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.utrgv.edu\/studentsuccess\/about-us\/index.htm\">Dr. Kristin Croyle<\/a>, vice president for Student Success at UTRGV.<\/p>\n<p>A number of factors contributed to this outcome, she said, including determined students, outstanding faculty, excellent educational programs, generous financial aid programs, and family support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis report validates the positive educational impact UTRGV has on our students,\u201d Croyle said. \u201cOur goal, and our responsibility, is to provide the very best educational opportunities for our students. They deserve no less.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Mobility-1-UTRGV-photo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7057\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Mobility-1-UTRGV-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Mobility-1---UTRGV-photo\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Mobility-1-UTRGV-photo.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Mobility-1-UTRGV-photo-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Mobility-1-UTRGV-photo-405x270.jpg 405w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Mobility-1-UTRGV-photo-60x40.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>EOP\u2019S RANKING METHODOLOGY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A college\u2019s mobility rate, as defined by EOP, is the product of\u00a0<em>access<\/em>, meaning the fraction of students who come from families in the bottom fifth income bracket, and its\u00a0<em>success rate<\/em>, meaning the fraction of such students who reach the top fifth.<\/p>\n<p>The EOP research, entitled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.equality-of-opportunity.org\/college\/\">Mobility Report Cards: The Role of Colleges in Intergenerational Mobility<\/a>,\u201d attempts to answer these two questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which colleges in America contribute the most to helping children climb the income ladder?<\/li>\n<li>How can we increase access to such colleges for children from low income families?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.equality-of-opportunity.org\/team\/\">principal investigators<\/a>\u00a0on the EOP are economists Raj Chetty of Stanford University, John Friedman of Brown University, and Nathaniel Hendren of Harvard University. The three principal investigators worked with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/?gws_rd=ssl#q=nicholas+turner+dept+of+the+treasury&amp;spf=1497991545139\">Nicholas Turner<\/a>, a financial economist in the Office of Tax Analysis, U.S. Department of the Treasury, to track about 30 million students born between 1980 and 1991.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers linked tax returns to attendance records from nearly every college in the country, covering all students from 1999 to 2013.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe used data on 30 million college students to construct mobility report cards \u2013 publicly available statistics on students\u2019 earnings and their parents\u2019 income \u2013 for each college in America,\u201d the EOP report says. \u201cOur analysis sheds light on how colleges shape children\u2019s prospects of upward mobility and how we can help more children climb the income ladder through higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018MID-TIER\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Researchers determined the colleges that have the highest upward-mobility rates typically are mid-tier public schools that have both large numbers of low-income students and very good outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>The term mid-tier refers to a definition based on a cross-tabulation of a set of variables, as determined by a selectivity index created by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.barrons.com\/\">Barron\u2019s<\/a>weekly\u00a0newspaper and published by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dow_Jones_%26_Company\">Dow Jones &amp; Company<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UTPA falls into this mid-tier category, a non-selective public\/private not-for-profit university.<\/p>\n<p>In the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/\">Vox.com<\/a>\u00a0article cited above,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2017\/2\/28\/14359140\/chetty-friedman-college-mobility\">\u201cThese colleges are better than Harvard at making poor kids rich<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0writer Dylan Matthews says:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026 The true heroes that come out of the research are not Ivies (Ivy League schools), but\u00a0less selective schools that accept a large number of students from low-income backgrounds\u00a0and help them climb the income scale. They include schools like the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/projects\/college-mobility\/city-college-of-new-york\">City College of New York<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/projects\/college-mobility\/california-state-university-los-angeles\">Cal State Los Angeles<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/projects\/college-mobility\/university-of-texas-pan-american\">University of Texas Pan American<\/a>\u00a0(which has since become\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Texas_Rio_Grande_Valley\">UT Rio Grande Valley<\/a>). All three of those schools took more than a fifth of their students from the bottom fifth of the income scale, and all three are in the top 10 schools ranked by the share of students who move up two or more income quintiles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mission of the Equality of Opportunity Project, as stated on its website, is \u201cto develop scalable policy solutions that will empower families to rise out of poverty and achieve better life outcomes.
