Photo: Carol Highsmith\/Wikimedia Commons<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Mark Richardson<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong>SAN ANTONIO, Texas \u2014<\/strong>\u00a0The effects of climate change on temperatures don\u2019t appear to be deterring people from moving to some of Texas\u2019 largest cities, according to a new report.<\/p>\n<p>The website Sparefoot, which helps people locate storage space,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sparefoot.com\/self-storage\/blog\/19318-the-hottest-hottest-cities-in-the-united-states\/\" target=\"parent\">rates the fastest-growing cities in the country by how rapidly their average temperatures are rising<\/a>. Earning places two through six on the survey are San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin and Houston, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Texas State Climatologist Dr. John Nielson-Gammon said he isn\u2019t surprised by the results. He said the reason seems obvious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMainly global warming. The pace of warming is comparable to what\u2019s been observed globally,\u201d Nielson-Gammon said. \u201cAnd actually, if anything, the natural variability or surface modifications have suppressed the warming a bit in Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s authors picked the 15 fastest-growing U.S. cities based on Census Bureau reports, and ranked them using the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bertsperling.com\/2013\/07\/02\/sizzling-cities-ranked-our-new-heat-index\/\">Sperling Heat Index<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.climatecentral.org\/news\/87-cities-4-scenarios-1-really-hot-future-for-us-17866\" target=\"parent\">Climate Central projection<\/a>\u00a0of extreme hot days for the rest of the 21st century. They found that some of the most popular destinations for those looking to relocate are also those likely to be hit hardest by the warming change.<\/p>\n<p>Nielsen-Gammon, who is also a professor at the College of Geosciences at Texas A&amp;M, said based on the criteria, Texas should dominate the list.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTexas is a relatively warm state with lots of people,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is hotter \u2013 on average, temperatures are about 1.5 to 2 degrees warmer than they were during the 20th century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Climate studies show rising temperatures are likely to bring problems to cities such as higher pollution levels, more disease and water shortages if global warming continues unabated.<\/p>\n<p>Phoenix was number one on the list of \u201chot\u201d cities getting hotter.
