Taylor<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>EDINBURG, TEXAS \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>When it comes to giving back to the community, UTRGV student Jesus Basa\u00f1ez learned from some of the best. His grandmother, Ernestina Notargiacomo, started the ball rolling. Then her daughter (and Jesus\u2019s mother), Bonnie Notargiacomo, followed. Now, it\u2019s Jesus\u2019s turn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All three generations have made a career in rehabilitation. All three have been recipients of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/students\/college\/aid\/rehab\/scholrsp.html\">Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA) Scholarship.<\/a>\u00a0And all three have been part of the UTRGV\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.utrgv.edu\/rehab-counseling\/about\/faculty\/index.htm\">School of Rehabilitation Services and Counseling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the RSA Scholarship, which is geared toward vocational rehabilitation, Ernestina received her Master of Science in rehabilitation counseling from legacy institution UTPA in 2005.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She was 64 years old and already had built a career as a vocational teacher, but pursuing higher education was important to her in order to better serve her clients.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then her daughter Bonnie got the same scholarship. UTRGV Photo by Paul Chouy<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Basa\u00f1ez is pursuing his Master of Science degree in rehabilitation and counseling at UTRGV, aided by the same scholarship. When he found out he had been awarded, he said, it felt like validation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI felt so honored to receive the scholarship and I felt proud of my grandmother,\u201d he said. \u201cShe recently passed away, so I felt a wave of sadness and pride at the same time. If I could fill her shoes even by a fraction, I\u2019d be happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSA scholarships award roughly $20,000 per year, with the average rehab services student enrolled for two and a half years. With the scholarship, the student also receives a monthly stipend, on top of all courses and materials covered.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon graduation from the program, the student is required to \u201cpay back\u201d the scholarship by working two years for each year awarded in a public rehabilitation program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonnie, Basa\u00f1ez\u2019s mother, said the scholarship helped her complete her master\u2019s degree, and the rehabilitation services program at legacy institution UTPA \u201cfit her like a glove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe program represents a lot of my values and what I stand for,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I heard that my son received the same scholarship, I had a huge smile on my face and got goosebumps. UTRGV Photo by Paul Chouy<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along the way, both Bonnie and Ernestina were diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blindness.org\/stargardt-disease\">Stargardt disease<\/a>. It is a hereditary retinal disease that slowly deteriorates the retinas, often leading to total blindness. The diagnosis influenced their mutual interest in helping people, specifically those with vision disabilities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utrgv.edu\/en-us\/about-utrgv\/news\/press-releases\/2016\/april-19-utrgv-rehab-services-program-earns-two-national-honors\/\">Dr. Bruce Reed<\/a>, UTRGV professor of rehab services and counseling and director of the School of Rehabilitation Services &amp; Counseling, said Ernestina Notargiacomo was a wonderful role model for other students.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe never once asked for an extension or special treatment, despite her disability,\u201d he said. \u201cSometimes, people with disabilities become grouchy or angry and don\u2019t want to work, but Ernestina was quite the opposite. She was friendly, outgoing, and had an amazing personality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be awarded the RSA Scholarship, applicants must have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, provide transcripts, a r\u00e9sum\u00e9, letters of recommendation and a letter of intent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basa\u00f1ez\u2019s letter included his informal work in rehab services, helping his grandmother serve her clients once her vision became too impaired.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI used to drive my grandmother to her client\u2019s houses, since she did home visits, and I helped her with files,\u201d Basa\u00f1ez said. \u201cThat\u2019s when I knew I wanted to work within the same field. Even now, when I run into some of her old clients and tell them that she recently passed, they\u2019ll cry and share stories about how she positively impacted their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basa\u00f1ez said that once he completes his master\u2019s in rehabilitation and counseling, he plans to work the time required by the scholarship in a local agency. His goal, he said, is to become a professor of rehabilitation and counseling services so he can share his knowledge with students coming into the field.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reed said the family\u2019s dedication to providing rehabilitation services has been steadfast, despite challenges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhenever I think about this family receiving these scholarships, it just puts a smile on my face,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s powerful to think that there\u2019s this continuous impact spanning over three generations.
