This special performance is sponsored by\u00a0<strong>Representative Oscar Longoria<\/strong>\u00a0and coordinated by Austin\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Full Gallop<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The group, now in its second year, is made up of Santa Rosa High School students in the small town Santa Rosa, deep in the Rio Grande Valley. Instructed by veteran musician\u00a0<strong>Juan Antonio Tapia<\/strong>, students learn traditional conjunto music on instruments standard in the genre, such as button accordion, bajo sexto, electric bass and drums. Tapia has decades of extensive knowledge and experience in Conjunto and Norte\u00f1o music, having regularly played with legends such as\u00a0<strong>Cornelio Reyna<\/strong>\u00a0and most recently,\u00a0<strong>Gilberto Perez<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Presented by Austin non-profit organization\u00a0<strong>Rancho Alegre Radio<\/strong>, this year\u2019s Rancho Alegre Conjunto Festival will be held at various venues in the Austin area. The annual showcase of traditional, accordion-driven music will feature over twenty different groups from all over Texas, including Jimenez, in addition to partnering with the Austin Tejano Music Coalition, who will be presenting the Austin round of their popular\u00a0<strong>Tejano Idol<\/strong>\u00a0talent search competition along with performances from previous contestants.<\/p>\n<p>The festival kicks off\u00a0<strong>Friday, May 4<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0with an evening show at\u00a0<strong>Stubb\u2019s Graceland Grocery<\/strong>\u00a0in Oak Hill from\u00a0<strong>4 to 8 p.m.,<\/strong>\u00a0with the main event taking place from\u00a0<strong>11 a.m. to midnight at Stubb\u2019s Waller Creek Amphitheater<\/strong>\u00a0and wrapping the weekend up with an early evening tardeada at\u00a0<strong>One-2-One Bar on Sunday, May 6<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0from 6-8 p.m<\/strong>. All events are\u00a0<strong>free, open to the public, and all ages with adult.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since beginning in 2012, the festival has grown year over year, and moved to Stubb\u2019s over Cinco de Mayo weekend in 2017 after a two-year hiatus. In the four previous years, the festival has presented nearly 70 different groups and special guests. This year is no exception, with over a quarter of the lineup playing the festival for the first time. In addition to Jimenez, notable performers include legends\u00a0<strong>Gilberto Perez Sr., Pepe Maldonado<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Chano Cadena<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Chencho &amp; Frank Flores<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Bene Medina<\/strong>, as well as Austin groups\u00a0<strong>Los Texas Wranglers<\/strong>\u00a0and<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conjunto Los Pinkys<\/strong>. Rounding out the lineup are veterans and up-and-coming groups and future stars from Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Laredo and the Rio Grande Valley.\u00a0<strong>Los Arcos Hermanos Pe\u00f1a<\/strong>, the veteran family band from Dimmitt, Texas, are scheduled to play a double bill, with a time slot on Saturday May 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0at Stubb\u2019s and the tardeada at One-2-One Bar on Sunday May 6<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the music at both Stubb\u2019s locations, a wide variety of local food, arts and crafts and other vendors will be on-hand, in partnership with Austin\u2019s own\u00a0<strong>Las Ofrendas<\/strong>\u00a0founder\u00a0<strong>tk tunchez<\/strong>. Vendor applications are being accepted through Sunday, April 22<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0and information is available on the Rancho Alegre Radio website:\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ranchoalegreradio.org\/festival\/vendors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/www.ranchoalegreradio.org\/festival\/vendors<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the conclusion of Day Two Saturday May 5<sup>th<\/sup>, the festival will attempt to set an official Guinness World Record for number of accordionists playing the classic Conjunto polka \u201cViva Seguin\u201d at the same time. \u201cWe are very excited about this for a few reasons. One, \u2018Viva Seguin\u2019 is a standard song that nearly all Conjunto accordionists learn, so just about everyone who plays the instrument knows the song. This will allow for a wide cross section of players to participate. Two, it\u2019s a chance to get Conjunto in the international record books.\u00a0 And lastly, our headliner for this festival is Flaco Jimenez, whose father, Santiago Jimenez Sr., composed the song,\u201d Cuellar said.
