Children games, pony rides, hula hoops, music and many other activities were part of last week\u2019s Autism Awareness Festival in Brownsville.<\/p>\n

The event, now in its third year, was held at Dean Porter Park.<\/p>\n

Since it was held to inform what implications autism might have on people, many of the participants were from companies involved in health-related issues such as home health care.<\/p>\n

Cynthia Gonzales, with Costa Therapy Institute, said they offer speech therapy services while Jeannette Garcia was introducing healthy foods from a company called Country Boys Quality Meals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are relatively new,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is our second event we\u2019ve attend .\u201d<\/p>\n

Jessica Guerrero, a home health administrator with Texas Nurse Care, said they serve the entire Rio Grande Valley.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cover Brownsville to McAllen, Los Fresnos and many other cities,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have expanded to include hospice and accept referrals from doctors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Benny Gonzalez, with an organization that hosts the event, said the festival is held to bring families together.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe main goal is to inform people of the impact autism might have on a community,\u2019 he said. \u201cIt\u2019s an important event.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matamoros resident Maria Teresa Rocha and Oreli Teran of Brownsville said they enjoyed the festival.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is pretty good,\u201d Teran said. \u201cGood for children, their parents and for families.\u201d<\/p>\n
