Photos: Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>by Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Fans of comic books, superheroes and science fiction movie characters flooded the McAllen Convention Center during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southtexascomiccon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">5th Annual South Texas Comic Con.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southtexascomiccon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">South Texas Comic Con<\/a> is a pop culture celebration where fans of comic books, fantasy, sci-fi, gaming and other genres can gather to meet artists, actors, writers, and publishers and to make friends with people who share their interests. Fans enjoy autograph sessions, photo ops and Q&amp;A panels with celebrities, cosplay contests, art workshops, video and card gaming tournaments, the Artist Alley, Vendor Market, Kid\u2019s Comic Universe and more.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8473\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0659.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8473\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8473\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0659.jpg\" alt=\"Julianne Gaytan and Ale Garza, students at La Feria Emergency Education Training Center, talk to a couple Comic Con fans.\" width=\"600\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0659.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0659-300x153.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8473\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julianne Gaytan and Ale Garza, students at La Feria Emergency Education Training Center, talk to a couple Comic Con fans.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The three-day pop culture event, now in its fifth year, has grown from just under 5,000 attendees to just over 20,000 people visiting over the course of the weekend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The convention was held on April 27-29 this year and featured many of today\u2019s popular television and movie icons such as Christy Carlson Romano, Yaya Hahn, Greg Baldwin, Jim Beaver, Cam Clarke, Joey Lauren Adams, Scott Wilson, Will Friedle, Jason David Frank, Mart Steger, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Kristian Nairn, and many more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Superman Dean Cain, who is best known for playing the dual role of Clark Kent\/Superman in the television series Lois &amp; Clark: The New Adventures of Superman television show and star in dozens of movies and TV shows, was one of the many celebrities who held question and answer sessions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8478\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0701.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8478\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8478\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0701.jpg\" alt=\"Lois and Clark star Dean Cain was a special guest at this year\u2019s South Texas Comic Con.\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0701.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0701-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8478\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lois and Clark star Dean Cain was a special guest at this year\u2019s South Texas Comic Con.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One of Cain\u2019s revelations was he is afraid of heights and mentioned two of his most terrifying experiences were while he stood on Australia\u2019s Sydney Harbour Bridge and on Toronto\u2019s CNN Tower, which stands more than 553 feet high.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWhen you are an actor you make yourself appear real in imaginary circumstances,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t like or feel comfortable of heights at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Cain said he likes to be known as the good man in Superman, not as the horrible character in the God\u2019s Not Dead movie.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Many of the people attending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southtexascomiccon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Comic Con<\/a> came from throughout the Rio Grande Valley and showed up in cosplay as their favorite characters from movies, anime and comic books.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8476\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0673.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8476\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8476\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0673.jpg\" alt=\"Cosplayers pose for photos at this year\u2019s South Texas Comic Con. Photos: Tony Vindell\/LFN<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Cosplay, a contraction of the words costume play, is a performance art in which participants called cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character. The rapid growth in the number of people cosplaying as a hobby since 1990s has made the phenomenon a significant aspect of popular culture in Japan and some other parts of Asia and in the Western world. Cosplay events are common features of fan conventions and there are also dedicated conventions and local and international competitions, as well as social networks, websites and other forms of media centered on cosplay activities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southtexascomiccon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">South Texas Comic Con<\/a> has a strong cosplay presence each year and guest professional cosplayers attend the convention to meet and take pictures with fans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThis is awesome!\u201d said one Rio Grande City participant dressed up as Qui-Gon Jinn, said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0666.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8475\" src=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0666.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0666\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0666.jpg 600w, https:\/\/losfresnosnews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_0666-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cEverybody is real friendly here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ivana Rodriguez and her family said they had been to several of the conventions held over the last few years by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/KaboomComicsMcAllen\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kaboom Comics<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southtexascomiccon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">South Texas Conventions<\/a> owner Ramsey Ramirez.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWe first attended Horror Con,\u201d said the Brownsville resident. \u201cIt\u2019s evolving. The costumes people wear today are a lot different.
